This is the first year I've had to separate kids from does. Both were bucklings and I couldn't risk another early breeding! They're more than capable, but you wouldn't know that with all the screaming that has been going on. Initially, I was going to move them right out of the building, but chose to pen them beside their mothers for the first little while -- less traumatic for both. That's the hope anyway -- can't tell right now! They screamed ALL afternoon and ALL night. When I went in this morning to milk, both mothers looked at me like: "For the love of PETE put them back in here!" I didn't.

Well, here they are now!


Both boys will remain in tact for this breeding season -- their sires will be castrated next month.

I'm getting ready to do some serious separating myself with the buck and our wether to a totally separate pen. Starting tonight the babies will be isolated at night only so I can milk mothers in the morning and then the babies will spend the day with their mothers and then will start the process all over again at night. I figure the babies and mothers will be okay once they get accustomed to it, but I expect the wether to throw a fit because this will be the first time he will be separated from his mother, but the buck needs a companion so he won't be lonely. I will have 3 does to milk each morning, that is if Ginger ever kids! She's still hanging in there, driving me crazy...

Your boys have really grown! They don't stay little long enough.

Weve been separating at night with 2 week old babies in a crate in the barn with mom and its not nearly as bad as I thought. We will be separating our second set a little sooner (1 week, for 8 hours) since we have a show this weekend.

I usually separate at 3 months. They usually need milk up until then. My boys will all get banded at 3 months.:idunno If your boys bred their moms, they are evil. ;) I'm just saying... o_O

But, my does don't usually go into season until fall. :caf
