I have a Western Pleasure Quater Horse and today I noticed that parts of his mane is coming out and the skin underneath looks dead/dry. Why is this happening? Is there a way I could fix it? Thanks.

Do you have a type of fencing where he can put his head thru? Often that will rub a spot "naked" on the mane. Same as a "cattle-style" round bale feeder - the kind that has a solid top ring. Other than those 2 ideas, it is hard to say without more info or pictures. If you are worried about the hairloss affecting him competition-wise, then you'd need to get a vet out and get it taken care of and re-grown.

Don't know how the weather is in your area, but we've been very wet and very humid. I mention this because it can lead to rain rot which will call bumpy, "pimple like" bumps that will come off and leave a hairless spot before healing. You can use a medicated shampoo, but in the past I've added a little diluted iodine into some regular horse shampoo.

Here's a link: http://www.equusite.com/articles/health/healthRainRot.shtml

Hope you find out what it is and that it resolves easily. Good luck!
