I thought about large blacks but my wife said we couldn't afford to eat them being they are so pricey.

Well we ate some of the dark pork tonight before the customers buy it all tomorrow - not religious and very hypocritical - OMG they were freakin good chops
We put the roasts in the fridges tonight ready for the morning rush and I still cant believe how pork can look as dark as beef

What is the going price on an 8 week old large black piglet in your area? Nearest breeder to me wanted $350.00 for a barrow feeder pig and wouldn't sell gilts or boars.

Hey Dino
We need every single pig for the store that doesn't make the grade for a breeder, registered breeding stock 8 week piglets are minimum $550 Canadian and very hard to find - we have only sold a few but demand is high.
Cornish might be able to tell you where in the States

Butcher hogs 250 to 300 pounds are selling in the ring for less than $58.00 per hundred weight, sows /ruffs are less than $35.00 per h.w. and boars are less than $20. The stores are full of pork because everyone is getting out or downsizing extremely. One local store is selling half hogs for $1.29 per pound out the door cut and vac packed... whole hog price is $1.19 per pound. And yes that includes the hog itself.

It would be pure foolishness to pay hundreds of dollars for any feeder size pig.

If anyone wants to verify... their phone is at the top of their web page. ebelsgeneralstore.com/weekly-ad

Demand for Large Blacks is high but as Royd said the taste is incredible. We have actually never sold pork, just raised enough for ourselves & so always sold our feeders (castrated boars) off at 8 weeks old. Normally went for $100 to $150 per piglet. If breeders are trying to sell barrows at $350 a piece tell them to go jump! That is WAY overpriced.

Thats what I thought... breeding stock is one thing but when its to butcher? But maybe they were show pigs? Oh well I couldn't see it but to each their own I guess.

I am going to raise my first pigs next spring and although I'm an old farm kid, we didn't keep hogs. So I too will be new to this. To answer your question, when I was young most every farm had a livestock calendar hanging in the barn or granary and there was always pictures of Black Poland hogs. Fifty years ago it was probably the most popular breed going and actually, they haven't lost a thing. If you could find reasonably priced purebred stock they are still a good choice.

I have seen a few really nice Polands, but I shy away from them due to the high number of stress carriers I found. I raise Berkshires, they look the same and I have been pleased with the breed in every way.
