We have some chestnuts, the large kind, as well as some chinquapins, the tiny kind, on the property. I've heard that some people feed them to hogs or let the hogs graze where they are. Has anyone tried this? Is there any problems with feeding them raw and fuzzy? I'm mostly concerned about them swallowing the whole "bur" whole and getting some sort of blockage. Would love some opinions on this. Thanks!

Hogs can eat them just fine. I'd graze them if possible. Mine graze on pecans in the fall.

We don't have chestnuts here in east Texas, or at least I have never seen any. We do have the chinquapins and if the burs off of those would choke/kill hogs, we'd be planting them all over the place to kill off the feral hogs that are such a nuisance! I have no personal experience with this issue, but I read other forums and have read that chestnut finished hog meat is delicious!

I think we're going to try it on the feeder hogs, I'll let everyone know how it goes. I've also heard that chestnut finished pork is prime :) Just could never figure out why the farmers would go to all the trouble to shell that many nuts... :hide

:yuckyuck And that is the beauty of this forum. You can come ask questions and some one will kindly tell you the answer to the best of their abilities. But that last statement did make me laugh!
