Just WOW! that is unreal. How do you keep thieves away?

Short answer: With difficulty. Dogs deter them, as does good fences and being watchful, but it's still a big problem. Our local unemployment figures are around 84% at the moment. When the police gets called out to a livestock theft they shrug and say "It's a pot theft" I.e. the animal/birds were stolen to fed a family, so that makes it o.k. in their book. We've taken to keeping an eye on each other's farms now and alerting each other before phoning the police.

Good dogs!

We have a huge, year round theft problem where we live (South Africa). The other day a friend popped in for a visit and asked if I have any chickens for sale, as she wanted some. Then told me she's waiting for someone she ordered some chickens from, but he has to go steal them first :th I didn't know if I should laugh or cry!

Hope the person he is stealing them from is not you!

What good dogs! Only a true idiot would try to get past them---and would deserve what they got. it must be un-nerving, knowing there was someone out there in the middle of the night, but a comfort to have the dogs out there doing their jobs. Good dogs!

You are so lucky that you have them! In my part of north Dakota, we've been getting every sort with the bakken oil boom. Lots of strange vehicles driving by, when I used to know every vehicle. I don't have a LGD, wish I did though since I don't think my llama would defend against a human but he sure hates canines!

Southern, that last bit, everything in her line of sight IS hers!! That is so true! In my limited experience with one GP, she thinks EVERYTHING is HERS!

That is a line up of some beautiful dogs. They are lucky to have you for their Mommy.
