Welcome to BYH :frow Please tell us more about your farm? I love reading everyone's stories.

We've been searching for a couple of years. Thought we found the perfect 9 acres, placed a call to the real estate agent and there was an accepted offer that morning. We were gutted, had a pity party, and moved on. Then we found it! We put an offer in on May 22nd and closed on July 12th - 10.2 acres!! The property hasn't been touched in probably 30 years, and has never been built on. It's an overgrown mess of trees, brambles, bushes, saw palmetto, chiggers and ticks. We have cleared fire lanes and three paths through the property with hand tools, a chain saw and an echo brush cutter. We have installed 7 strands of high tensile fencing with electric running to it. We are currently clearing a large meadow area that will be planted very soon with winter rye and clover for the winter.
My husband works relentlessly during the week while I suck up air conditioning as a QA manager for a not-for-profit hospice. I put in 16-20 hours or more on the weekends. We are finally (!!) ready for goats. We met a goat farmer that's about an hour north of us through a co-worker a couple of years ago and will be picking up a few (hopefully, probably pregnant) does on the 18th.

Our long-term goal is a farm that is self-sustaining. We are both unhappy with the way "food" tastes and want to cruise into middle age more healthy that we were a decade ago. We also want to create a business, which only time will tell how that plays out. We are currently beekeepers and I have started making a few products from our herbs and bee goodies.

Short-term goals are for the goats to help clear the land while we focus on meadows and orchards and ponds and barns.

Immediate goals - continue to have a blast living our dream!!!

That sounds AMAZING! Are you planning on building and moving there eventually?

I hear you on the stuff they tell us is "food" nowadays. I've vented to my heart's content on our sister site, SS about it: http://www.sufficientself.com/threads/real-food-mini-vent.14045/

Best of luck with your adventures and please keep us posted!
