Hi everyone,
I'm from Australia and I am interested in permaculture and sustainable living. I am wanting to start breeding and raising my own rabbits for meat in the next 12 months. I'm here to gather as much information to get me on my way and in time share my experience to help others. Really excited about this new hobby :)

Welcome from Texas! Can't wait to hear more about you and your adventures! Do you know what breed of rabbits you want to get? What sort of barn/cages have you selected? Do you live in town or on acreage?

Hi,
I'm wanting to breed New Zealand Whites - they are the most readily available rabbits here, I'm looking into colony raising as it seems a lot more humane to allow them to have their normal(ish) social interaction but i will probably have to experiment a bit a see what has the best results for me. I live on a small average plot, my partner and i are getting into permaculture, we grow the majority of our own fruits and vegetables and are now wanting to extend it into meat. I don't like chicken meat and ducks seems a bit too messy plus the rabbits are a better source of fertiliser. I need to find the balance though between giving the rabbits a good life but also getting a decent amount of meat from them, should be fun! thanks for the replies everyone :)

Welcome! :frow

We tried colony raising, but be aware it takes up a lot of space :ep we had to stop it because of that, not issues caused by the rabbits themselves.
We allowed ours to burrow though  and my concern was them hitting a powerline  so we contented ourselves with spoiling them instead :love

Congrats for checking out meat rabbits, they are great fun to keep.

The New Zealand is supposed to be one of the best, we breed mutts :D but only because there is nothing else near us.
