I know there are several members on here who spin.
What fibers do you guys like spinning?
What would you suggest for a beginner on a wheel?

My sheep are Ramboulliet crosses so I imagine I'll mainly be spinning that.....Maybe a little bit of yak fiber if I ever collect enough or get them calm enough to stand int the chute for me.

For some reason I have this mental picture of me spinning. I don't even know how to knit or crochet, don't have any fiber animals, but the whole idea appeals to me. It's too flippin' hot here to even wear much wool...... I still have this idea that I want to learn all the spin/knit/crochet stuff.......

we are learning with a blended mix of 4 different fibers to get the hang of working with our spinning wheel. We also have French Angora fiber(from our rabbits) and some merino to blend it with once we get better with our wheel. We started with a drop spindle and added a double treadle Ashford Kiwi II (it is a small wheel)yearly this year- we haven't had a lot of time to use it due to my dad getting pretty sick and him and my mom coming to stay with us for 4 months. I am hoping now that life is sort of getting back to "normal" we will be able to start spinning again. The shop we purchased it from offers classes so maybe look into that.

@Baymule, I'm a little bit the same way. I don't really wear much wool. I'm only good for knitting scraves/rectangles. But I really enjoy learning all this stuff.

I love the idea of it!
I don't have the patience for it. My DD likes to felt, has a whole bunch of fleece up in our walk in attic in bins. Taking up MY storage space. Double
We looked into the wheels... :ep

Not something I wanted to put that much money into until I knew she would stick with it... she doesn't have much time right now.

I haven't spun very much yet. I started with some generic 'sheep roving' I got at a fiber festival, it was inexpensive and had a nice feel to it. I wanted to get experience with the wheel before I started on better stuff and then my own sheep's wool.

After a lot of practice with the generic stuff, I went to an Icelandic/Border Leicester blend. I have really liked it! It has a nice feel, and it seemed to easily spin into a yarn that was finer than the generic stuff, and it also seemed easier to keep it a consistent size. I also have an Icelandic/alpaca blend I haven't tried yet.

Fiber shows are a really great place to see/feel all kinds of fibers.

@BrownSheep - good luck with your spinning, and I hope you get some yak fiber to work with!

I thinks it would be fun to go to a fiber show- there are some in our area but the timing never seems to work out for us....maybe that's a good thing ;)
