I got a sales tax exemption for ag a few months ago when I got my donkeys. I knew that cows would be on the way soon. I now have one cow and 4 goats. I will sell any offspring. So I have applied for ag exemption for property taxes but that will take 5 years of agriculture use on the land to go into effect for property taxes since it wasn't in ag before.

Now I'm doing the income taxes and have a small business/farm put into turbo tax. I have deducted things over 5 years that we purchased for farm like stock trailer, barn, livestock. Is there some reason that I must claim that I saved sales tax on those items because of the above mentioned sales tax exemption?

I doubt that you can DEDUCT these items, however, you should be able to DEPRECIATE them. Don't know about the sales tax, but in our state we just add the sales tax onto the price and depreciate the entire thing. You might ask an accountant who is familiar with agricultural tax preparation. A small fee to him could save you mega$$$ and lots of hassle in the long run. Good luck!

You are right, not deduct but they are assets I had to purchase and whatever they are doing gets the amount spread over 5 years. Somehow I believe it does actually add to the amount I invested into the business so money comes off what I owe. I am using turbo tax but we may take it to someone just to see if the amounts come out the same. Then if it does I will do turbo tax next year.
