I will wean at 8 weeks but seldom do, usually it is closer to 10 or 12 and if I am not milking the doe they might not self wean until 6 months or more. I am really glad your vet was able to help you out and I hope he continues to get better.

Are you using milk or replacer? If it is replacer that may be the reason for the bloat. Also, has he had his CDT vaccine?

He sure is a cute little guy.

Thanks!
Yes- After he bloated we switched to whole milk (w cream). We will be using milk still.
He was supposed to have the CDT the same day he bloated.(forgot to mention he battled pneumonia for a week right after) So we waited and have it scheduled for this Friday.

Glad you switched him, I get good results with whole milk and I know others do too. I know how the vaccines can be sometimes; you get ready to do them and then stuff happens and never good to vaccinate a sick baby.

Is he loving his bottle again?

:hugsGlad he is doing better and rather than feel horrible, feel proud that you noticed he was in trouble and acted right away!!! Some people do the wait and see thing and that often does not have a good outcome. He's a cute little guy and hoping he does well now!!! :)

I have weaned lambs off of milk replacer at 30 days old, no problem. I make sure these bottle babies are eating hay and grain and drinking water before weaning them. I've never had an issue with hypoglycemia -- but I don't think being taken off of milk would cause that? 12 lbs btw is awfully light for a 2 month old baby. Let's say he weighed 6 lbs at birth (my really teeny tiny babies just born weigh 6 lbs a piece right now), that means he's gained 3 lbs/month, which is less than 1 lb a week. A lamb should be gaining almost 1 lb every 1-3 days, even without hay and grain. How much milk are you feeding? He's probably very malnourished, and taking away the milk, now that I think about it, probably caused his 'crash.' What cutting is the timothy hay you are giving him? Is water available to him? I would give him some nutri drench as well.

eta: even if he was 15 lbs, that is still 4.5 lbs/month, which is less than half of what he should be gaining a month. Even my slowest growing lambs gain 10 lbs a month. My fastest gain 20-25 lbs/month.

I just now got back to this. He was 4-5 lbs at birth. We were up to 14 oz of formula 4-5 times a day before we tried to wean. He now weighs 22lbs (so gained 10 lbs in 3 weeks). we give him 5 oz of milk every 4 hours, he has plenty of hay, pellets and oats. Seems to be doing well now, but he won't drink water from a bowl, so we do give him water via bottle. I don't have any other lambs right now, and may not be able to get him a friend for about another few weeks.
