Newbie with a Nubian

I got my first goat on the 21st of last month. A Nubian cross buckling...

My husband bought him at auction and he was in a group of about 20...he was asked which one he wanted...he went to point and Oreo latched onto his finger...so that's who he brought home to me as a surprise!

I've been waiting a long time for a goat to milk...want a doe really bad...and end up bottle feeding this lol buck! Lol

We'll be keeping him for sure...I fell in luv...the debate right now is whether or not we want to wether him...

Well, first he will need a buddy as goats should not be alone. You obviously want to get a doe for future milking but you will in the end not want to keep an intact buck in with a milking doe , nor will you want a young doeling accidentally bred too young.

Intact bucks will pee on their face and body and generally smell, during rut season they will be .
We have lots of intact bucks and we adore them but we are use to the odor and love on them anyway.

You may want to consider castrating him so you can find a doe. He can then stay with her or later stay with an intact buck.
Great to start out small with 2 goats and learn as much as you can.

Congrat on your first kid! They are addictive and you have come to the perfect site. We will enable you completely.

Welcome to the addiction! It's completely true that your goat needs a companion. And that's how it starts. You can't have just one. Then you realize you can't have just two. We didn't even know we wanted a goat 10 months ago. Now we have five. And this last one is finally my milk goat. It will happen. And post pictures!!! Not only can we not get enough actual goats. We also need to see a never ending stream of other people's goats as well.

Welcome! We just got sucked into goats this past fall first one and then need a buddy for that one...was planning just to have the 2 and now we have 5 with 2 does yet to kid!

Welcome to the site for goat addicts. I started with 3 seven years ago and now have 24 does, 15 kids, 1 buck (getting 2 more this summer), 11 more does to kid out this year,and I am building a dairy. It is an addiction.

Afternoon bottle... His name is Oreo.

He's not the only one on the property, dh brought home 2 bucks that I think might be Nigerians last Saturday, they have horns and are quite a bit older than him, so he is sleeping in a giant dog crate in our shop, and I take him to the pasture for playtime and so he can nibble...

The one time I left him in the goat pen with them the leader of the pair charged him and head butted him in the side as soon as I was out of the pen...

Maybe this is normal "goat" behavior...idk ...New goat mommy here... But I panicked pulled him out of the pen and haven't left him alone with them since...

He obviously thinks I'm momma, he stays on my heel better than my dog...

The smell and buck behaviors are definitely a concern, and I want to keep the milk sweet when I do get does...

I might be getting a 9 month old 1/2 saaen 1/2 Boer, she is all white with a black hood... But I've got to Sell the other two bucks first!
