I knew she would be a keeper ;)

Only 19 goats?!? :)

The problem with only 19 goats is that it is an uneven number and we ALL know that you MUST ONLY round up when it concerns goat numbers or the gods will not approve! BTW, Skywarrior, have you trained any of your goats to pull a chariot yet? They are great at that.

Just finished reading your other birthing thread. It sounds a lot like the kid with the distended abdomen, if you had done a necropsy, might very well have had a birth defect affecting her intestines, thus the distension. This can lead to meconium being spilled during birth and thus an infection for everyone including Honey and her mommy. Nothing you could have done there. Sounds like you did an awesome job all told.

Thanks! It was a total nightmare. I'm surprised I managed to save Honey given how sick she was. DH was convinced she was going to die when 24 hours after I brought her inside. But the little one pulled through. Honey has now been renamed Galadriel by DH and I get the feeling we're going to be keeping her and probably Nutmeg and Cinnamon. :thHeidi (Galadriel's mom) keeps calling for her, but when I bring her over, she doesn't do anything for her. Instead, her two kids from last freshening, Ginger and Angus, are drinking up her milk. Angus doesn't realize that makes him a milk-fed yearling which will be good eating. The Spice girls (Cinnamon and Nutmeg) are with the does but their mom, Belle, just screams for me and not for them. :hu

Seriously, I'm thinking of selling Frost because she looks smallish for a boer mix. I like her but she's not in keeping with the breeding program. I should sell Delilah and Annie, but I can't make myself yet. So, we're probably at 13 goats when the wethers are in freezer camp and Frost is sold. Then, I'll wether Oreo and probably put him in freezer camp when the time comes. :idunno That will get us down to 11 does and 1 buck, but, by golly, we were thinking to get down to 8 at one time.

She pulled through because she had an excellent foster mommy who took really, really good care of her.

Blush. Thanks! :D =D I appreciated the information on that. You set my mind at ease that I did everything possible for the other kid. If she hadn't been breech, I might have been able to save her. But the description of meconium inhalation seems spot on. I swung that poor kid trying to get all the fluids out, but she had inhaled way too much. Galadriel must have had it too but the antibiotics fixed the infection. She's still small, but she's doing awesome, BTW!

She sounds like she is a premie. I commented in your other thread about her tummy problems. But premies can be very touchy and you can lose them easily. A Vitamin B shot wouldn't hurt. Probios in her bottle for a few days would be good. Yogurt if you don't have pro bios. Make sure she doesn't get chilled. (If she is a premie she might have a harder time regulating her temperature) If your house is "dry" use a humidifier for a day or two.

Yeah, we think she was a premie. But she's doing so well, she's almost the size of her half sisters who are a week ahead of her. :celebrateShe's out with them now in the main pen and still being given a bottle three times a day. The other two get a bottle twice a day which makes her third feeding interesting. :caf I think we're good with her. She has such a great personality too.

Well, we left early this morning to get Sid, our old guard llama, to the vet to get his teeth worked on. When we came back, I wanted to get eggs from the chickens. At that point, I noticed Annie licking a baby. So, I sent my DH to the house for towels, iodine, and dental floss while I checked on the baby. Annie had two babies. Two bucklings. So, we named them Double Stuff and Herbie. Here are some pictures of them.

They're all doing fine. Annie is keeping the other goats away from the little ones. She's good about that.
