We live in Mississippi. Been farming over a decade. We raise purebred ADGA Nubian dairy goats, AQHA/APHA horses, English orpington chickens, great pyrenees LGDS and AKC Labrador Retrievers. Looking to learn about food gardening and maybe fodder. We have a pond stocked with catfish and previous owner said bass, don't know how to care for them or keep pond healthy... Trying out incubating chicken eggs for the first time. Love finding ways to make our farm self sufficient. Any and all advice is welcome!

:frow Welcome fellow Mississippian! We moved to MS ten years ago today and no regrets...love it here! We raise hair sheep and chickens and have a catfish pond also, which was self sustaining and established when we bought this place, so nothing had to be done....but...we do feed them the floating catfish pellets for our own enjoyment :) Well...I'm sure the catfish enjoy it too...they come to the top to gobble it up.

We have chickens and I also had to give the incubator a try and I do love hatching the chicks, but with my new incubator this year have had not great hatches...old one worked better but it died...so, you don't want advice from me ;)

Started with a huge garden that about killed us in the heat of summer and weeds....now have gone to raised garden beds and tomatoes and peppers are in half barrels...only way to go in my opinion unless the heat doesn't bother you.

Trying fruit trees, but so far the beetles and birds are winning on that one.

Lots of great info on Backyard Herds and again...welcome :)

Oh, the heat definitely effects me lol I'm used to cooler climates... I had a container garden this year, it was fun but the plants got scorched on our porch lol. I think our fish are doing well, I see them kind of jump and slosh around. We had one die this year, it was small and floated to the top, didn't seem to bother the other. I just don't know anything about ponds and I want to ensure it stays healthy. It turned red for awhile this year then went back to normal... I'm putting my first batch of eggs in today, wish me luck! Glad to meet somebody in the area!
