I have recently purchased a breeding pair of Rex rabbits. They were born in May and June. So they won't be 6 months till Nov and Dec. I'd like to wait to breed them until they are 8-10 months old. Since I live in Illinois this puts breeding between Feb and Apr. If I wait till Mar/ Apr I think I'll have better weather for the kits and doe in general, but was wondering if anyone breeds in the winter? If you do how do you winterize your rabbit hutch?

We do but our rabbits share space in our heated shop. If your rabbits are outside you would need to provide a shelter of some type- maybe a semi-closed box and straw for warmth. I know that there are others who raise rabbits outside and take the nest box in and out so the kits are keep warm.

Hopefully others will stop by with ideas for you!

I have a building they are in and it keeps it about 10 degrees warmer in there than outside. We live in Minnesota so winter breeding without heating is a no go. However, many start breeding in february, just be ready with heat lamps and lots of hay and straw. The less drafts the better so if you can get them in an area with no drafts and a nice wooden nesting box that seems to work best for us.

I breed year round in an outdoor shed without heart in Pennsylvania. They are meat rabbits, however.

I don't like heat lamps, momma keeps them warm.
