I have 6 (well now 5 and a 1/2) bales of hay and I plan on having a 6 bale supply of hay at all times. I only have 2 nigerian dwarf does. My husband tore down our rabbit racks outside, so we can move them inside, and build a square wooden box to contain the hay. At first I thought this was an excellent idea but now i'm concerned because I know there is little to no ventilation in the box. Is this still going to be ok, or what is something we could do to alter the box so that we can still use it. All the hay that we have is already dried and baled so the hay is not wet at all and we keep it compressed. This is what the girls will us through out winter and I want to make sure to keep the hay as fresh as we possibly can for them.

Hmmm. Seeing this I wanted to post about how I do it for our horses but not sure if you have a barn. We have some sorta livestock rooms that we use but a horse stall also works if you have a barn. For sure put a pallet at the bottom but thats all I know sorry

No we have no barn, we're in the middle of a town on 1/2 an acre. I have a shed that I cleaned out where I keep my rabbits, feeds (in rodent proof bins), and now hay. The box is sitting up on a pallet as well. I forgot to mention that.

As long as it's off the ground and the shed has adequate ventilation so it doesn't hold in dampness/moisture, I would think it will be fine. Not sure of the particulars, but you need to be careful mixing new hay in with old as the variation in moisture content can cause fire...

It's all new hay, bought from the same farm at the same time.
