Semper Fi and thanks for serving. 24 yrs retired Navy Chief. I don't own a CO. My avatar is my LGD/Companion dog. He was born 1-2-2015 & purchased from @Southern by choice at the end of May 2015. He is 50/50 Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyreneese. We conversed extensively prior to my purchase and I drove there to meet the sire and dam as well as Southern and her other LGDs and family when I purchased Mel. The great advantage was that SBC does a LOT of posts here with pictures so I got to follow Mel's progress from birth till purchase right from here.

I have owned several purebred and mutt dogs over my "few" decades... Mel is my first foray into the LGD breeds as I'm trying to get "back to the land" and become more self sufficient and capable of surviving the tough times that I perceive coming. I expect to have goats and a few meat sheep and will be moving to an area that has many coyotes. I expect down the road to acquire a female either pure Pyr or same mix and if all goes well, will breed them to produce excellent working LGD dogs.

There was a member here that is no longer active and the website is no longer, but they were in NH. There's another that I've heard of, I believe in NY.

I hope it all comes together for you. Hope you'll keep us posted on your progress and share some pics when the time comes. Grats on your new marriage(?) and best wishes on your future homestead and kids!

Semper Fi and THANK YOU for your service! I appreciate the insight and help. I tried to find local breeders and I have tried track down some of the members that have seemed to have good insight on the breed. @Southern by choice has been GREAT. You have been great! I like the Thunderhawk animals (I have been to their website, along with all the others i mentioned in my first post, dozens of times). I have yet to call them. I have made calls to most, but I am holding off for now because of the great feedback from you and others have provided. I love the fact that people (you and others) are willing to take the time to help me with the process...I am not one to jump right in and I am now REALLY excited at the feedback and openness that i received. I have done it on my own for a year plus and THIS is much better. I will continue to ask questions and post on things that come up so i thank you for the help...Recently Married this past June, retired 2013 from the Corps and now looking forward to building our new home with our OWN space and starting the family (kids and my dogs)!

I've seen and heard an owner, this is not a joke, that said "I bought him because he is awesome and is a great guard dog and looks like a lion" (Tibetian Mastif)...conversation was 15 minutes or so and the man had no clue what he was talking about and basically bought this animal because it was cool, without REALLY knowing the genetics, temperament, etc.

That is another breed that SHOULD NOT BE IN THE HANDS of a person like the gentleman I mentioned.

I worked with the Tibetan almost 30 years ago now. People have no clue! You are so right!
as a CO, Komodor, Staffordshire/Pit, Ridgebacks, Malamutes, wolf-Hybrids, Presa's, Akita's...list goes on

LOL VERY accurate list!

One of my favorite protection (not LGD) dogs is the Fila Brasileiro but unless I had 1000 acres on a mountain... um NO.
The Fila was used for bull pinning ( taking down bulls)!
15 years ago when I was looking there were alot of breeders that were... lets just say .... :sick I will NEVER understand why people want to raise fighting dogs.
There again... another dog on that list. Sadly they are outlawed in many countries. :(

@Southern by choice I can't wait to talk... I never saw this post. No clue you had a Tibetan! very interesting animal. love to hear about that one..Fila's are one breed I have yet to really dig into...I HAVE heard a little bit about them, but to your point we are looking at 15-20 acres of wooded land. I think that would be a little much and i would have to go right back to the drawing board on that one. You know where i stand w/ the CO's :). I cannot imagine a dog taking down a full grown bull...thats insane!

I didn't own the Tibetan I worked with them.
I have had the privilege of working with some of the finest dogs in the country.
Personally I wouldn't own one. Every once in a while the thought rolls through and then I go nah... what am I thinking. ;)

I commend you Maine 0311 you are one of the few people that I have talked with that have an understanding of the breed and what you are getting into. Not someone that just wants something different or heard this or that .

Fila's were once referred to as the worlds best protection dog.
Fila's have saved the lives of many owners. Many women have them for protection when they are living alone, or those that live in the mountains. They can hold a foe and not kill but lets the message be known that they are certainly capable. They do have drawbacks though... not much different than I deal with in some of our LGD's.

Hi, I'm from Maine too and I was wondering if you had bought your CO yet as I'm interested in one but I too can't find anything except for what you've found. I was looking into Rockhill but I'm not sure about them so I was hoping to get some input from you on where the best breeder in the US was.

The OP hasn't been active since Feb 13th 2016... I doubt he'll see your post and most likely will not be back. Sorry...
