I'm researching which vaccinations and when to give to cattle, hoping to get a couple of my own next year. The forum here has been helpful, but I'd like to ask specifically what vaccinations do you give your cows and calves? Farmers here in Northern Wisconsin have recommended UltraBac 10 and Triangle, as well as wormer and selenium, and I'm hoping you guys can give me some pointers as well. The cattle would be on pasture, if that matters. Thanks for reading.

Here is my current regimen

At Birth - 0.5-1ML (depends on the size of the calf) of Vitamin A&D and Vitamin E & Selenium
(if a calf is showing any signs of illness I will re administer at one week of age, calves with white muscle disease are to be treated more therapeutically aka more often with a higher dose)
MAKE SURE that all calves navels are dipped immediately after birth in iodine.

1 Week of Age - Inforce 3 (pneumonia nasal spray)

6 Weeks of Age - 8 Way Vaccine (Covexin)

12 Weeks of Age - 8 Way Vaccine (this is the booster to the one at 6 weeks)

6 Months Old - Inforce 3

1.5 Years Old - Inforce 3, 8 Way Vaccine

Re-do the Inforce and 8 Way Yearly from this point on

I have never started deworming a calf until they are about 6 months of age but every area has different risks. It's not a major concern for us especially during the months our calves are small.

Thanks so much. Also, if cows are given a mineral lick with selenium do they need a shot as well, in your opinion?

For a newborn calf yes always give the Vitamin A&D and E & Selenium at birth. Don't worry about giving that injection to your cows, just the calves. A cow will pass on things like white muscle disease to their calves so by using things like the mineral lick you will prevent the calf from being born will illness. But...these injections are cheap and better to do than not, rather be safe than sorry thinking.

For things like deworming we do ours annually. Every area is different though you may find yours need it more or less. We have had to do it at times out of our schedule because we will get a cow from an auction or something, it will show up and days later we will have a case of mange. Then we know who it came from but we will treat the entire herd. We use the pour on dewormer. We feed them a bunch of grain and as they are eating we pour it on. Even our spookiest cows are ok with this.

If you are raising yearlings or an established cow until slaughter ready and then slaughtering or selling you don't really have to worry about anything other than deworming. If you are keeping them for over a year then you will need to. What is your plan?

One thing I learned quickly was I couldn't properly raise cows without a cattle handling system (squeeze, head gate). Do you have something like this?

I have a 14 week old. Based on what I'm reading here, I'm going to do the Covexin now then again in 6 weeks. Is subq and better than IM. Also is there a risk of abscess?
