stud fee??

I had someone inquire about breeding to my bull. Just wondering, what do most folks charge for a stud fee??

If this person is a friend of yours then it would be a nice thing to do. If it would be a pain or a problem, then I would charge something. Or is this someone just looking for a freebie? For a stud fee, probably a couple hundred dollars and up.

I'd say $50 - $75 per head would be fair. AI would still be cheaper, depending on the bull used.

They are registered Scottish Highlands. Not too many of them around here. I was thinking $200.
She would probably be staying 45 days.

The law of supply and demand at work

Horse fees are generally 500 plus a mare care fee 15/day.
definitely make sure you're atleast getting enough money to support the extra cow for the time frame you have her. Also a vet check prior is a good idea to prevent any disease brought to your herd.

Well, when I was raising/showing/promoting mini horses, I used a written contract. There is a liability for any animal on your farm. Waaaay back then, my stud fees were a really nice income. Supply & demand work fine if you have livestock that command it. My Natl Champ halter stallion had a waiting list for $1,500. fee, plus mare care.

I would think $200 quite reasonable for a Highland plus the care being included. It would be a fee I would entertain if I had a cow. The AI process can be expensive with vet fees, multi visits, shipped semen, etc.

Just my thoughts.

This is a late response but if you come looking going rate in our area for a bull fee is $100 per cow/heifer in the field. Regardless of the outcome. That $100 per cow also includes them picking it up and dropping it off. That price is fair to me and hell, we are the ones feeding the damn animal which in the end if you think about it, only saves you (the bull owner) money. As a bull owner its a good deal and as the cow owner its good for us too. We don't have to put up with the bulls being hard on our land/fences throughout the year

Since your bull is a registered Scottish Highland bull and that breed is not commonly found in your area, you need to take that into consideration. Also do these owners expect registration papers on the breeding - a stud service certificate - so they can register the calf? Can you register a grade SH is only one parent is registered? All things to check out.

Mainly, check out the thread by CJC entitled "Fee for Renting a Bull" since if you are keeping the cow for 45 days, you are letting yourself in for possible problems. What does a registered SH calf go for? How much to replace your bull or their cow?
