Open barns provide ventilation , closed barns do not do a very good job of geting rid of amonia from feces and urine causing many farm animal losses after weakened lungs of the new born animals get infected with diseases. Why do you think that barns in the US have spaces between the side barn boards ? This has been proved time and again in third world closed barn practices where the barns are quite solid and very common there by the Peace Corps folks. This fact has also been verified and confirmed by many scientific studies too.
I dont think you understand what i ment. By "Open Barns" i mean it looks like this.
Basically just a roof. I understand and firmly believe in some ventilation but i highly doubt this style barn in the middle of winter in northern michigan is for the best for the calves unless you have them packed in there so its so hot they cant have walls or they would over heat....which is what i ment by overcrowding.
i have yet to see a study that compares this type of barn to a normal barn for calves in a northern enviroment. THe old farmers well tell you and insist you can not rasie calves without this style of barn because they must be kept cold...warmth spreads disease and death.
