Hi! I live near Dayton Ohio and acquired 4- 10 week old nigerian dwarf goats last night. Goats are new to me and I've been researching as I can. Offering them full browse of hay and loose minerals. Only nibbles of grain right now. They were weaned last week. They were field raised on mama so still skittish of people, but are slowly starting to come around. As you can tell my almost 7 year old daughter is going to get them tame in no time ;-) The black and white spotted one is Oreo, the black with a little white is Cookie, The cream/black is Caramel, and the brown with white ears is TBD we were thinking cupcake or brownie but haven't decided yet :) any input is gladly taken in, also any tips on raising/keeping them is also appreciated. I'm so nervous I'm going to mess it all up... anyways just thought I'd say hi!

I don't have any goats at the moment but Ive been around them lots.
They're really fun until they get out.

Anyway, welcome to BackyardHerds.
Everyone here loves pictures so if you have any don't hesitate to upload them.

Greetings and welcome to BYH. We have a really great group of active goat owners here, so if you run into something you're not sure of, chances are you can post here and get an answer fairly quickly. Congrats on the new additions! They sure are cute... your daughter too! I could only tell for sure that one is a doeling... if there's a buck there and he hasn't been wethered (castrated), you're going to want to separate him out straight away! Does can become receptive as early as 12 weeks... same with the boys, and Nigies are year round breeders, not just fall.

You may want to consider a medicated (for coccidiosis) goat chow for them until they mature. Cocci is a silent killer and can kill a kid in no time if you don't catch it. It's normally the biggest problem with the young, less of an issue with adults, after they've had a chance to build up a resistance to it. Do you know if their moms got CD&T shots before kidding? Something to look into for them soon. There is a reference article here you can check out: http://www.backyardherds.com/resources/so-you-bought-a-baby-goat-now-what.59/ Anyway, welcome and congrats!

Hi and welcome! I recently added Nigerian Dairy Goats to my farm. We ended up getting seven! Four of them are adults already and weaned to the milk stand. Our little buckling is so tiny that is seems almost cruel to separate him and his friend the wether, from the five does but I do not want kids until I am prepared.

My little buckling is no bigger than a cat and smaller than our rooster! LOL

We haven't had any of the does escape but Houdini the buckling has been out mingling with the chickens a few times. His wether friend tells on him every time he gets out. He doesn't run, just stands there and lets you pick him up. Such a sweetie... I'm dreading the day he starts peeing on his face.
