What to do about stray dogs?

We are big fans of the SSS plan, but it does have a down side. In our neighborhood, what comes around goes around, we've eliminated enough pesky dogs that a neighbor got mad and returned the favor. Not so happy about that, but our dog was on his place, probably being too friendly. I did notice that when his dog was out the other day and made a beeline for our goats, and I happened to be outside to yell at it, the neighbor called back the dog and locked him up. You see, I no longer have a canine friend for him to shoot, and my boys are mighty good shots. I haven't seen that dog since.

My closest neighbor is half a mile away, and his dogs aren't a problem. What I get are poor dogs that have been dumped. If they've gone feral, there's not a real choice.

We have neighbors that are responsible dog owners. Most people keep their dogs up, there are some people about a mile away that always have a horde of mangy mutts, but they never come this far. So far, there have been no "dumps" of dogs. Knock on wood......

Parson45 has the right plan and the right caliber..

Animal control here used to come out and sugarcoat it. "We will find it a good home..". Now, on the rare times anyone calls and they actually do respond, they don't even look at us or the animal--they just toss it in the truck's cage. Pretty sure it's days are numbered..if even in days.

Or coyotes clean 'em out! There were 3 strays around here for awhile. but no more. We heard the coyotes killing one of them one night right in front of our place. Made me feel bad for the poor dog, but not bad enough to go shoot the coyotes and wind up with a badly wounded stray mutt that I didn't want.

I hate coyotes! Two weeks ago while I was laid up after foot surgery, my only milk goat got her head stuck in the fence. When I found her the next morning, her whole back half was gone.

Aw, that is terrible! I am so sorry you lost your milk goat this way. :hugs

Consider ahuman trap from your local veterinarian hospital or animal shelter. fencing is another option
