I'm an old member of BackYard Chickens forum, and soaked up as much as I can from there, so don't do much there anymore. I've had a flock of Peruvian Araucanas that give me wonderful eggs, for over a decade now.
Recently, I've been contemplating a method or two of small, personal, meat-production - and I've come here to read, to learn, to listen to folks' answers - and help me make decisions on where to go, and how to proceed.
My current health-problems make me have to be on a high-protein/very low-carb diet - and I'd like to try adding more variety to my current mostly-eggs dinners.
I used to have rabbits and goats, back when my kids were still living at home - I was raising meat, milk, eggs, and veggies to help feed them on my solitary paycheck. Right now, I'm thinking along the lines of "multi-purpose" critters - that will be kind of easy to care for, make meat - and either skins for use, or help with vegetation control. I need "brushing up" and to get my dominoes lined up right - to start this protein-production project.
I KNOW ya'all folks'll help! Thanks! :D =D

Depends on if my fencing gets done first - or the lean-to I wanna build to house suspended rabbit-cages gets done first! Cause I'm older, I often have to wait for a visit from my sons or daughter to get any "big construction" done. ;)

You might be looking for rabbits. They are easy to care for and multi purpose. The Rex is a good breed to start with if you want pelts and meat. Welcome to BYH:welcome!!

Welcome from Ohio - if you're looking to get something larger, both sheep and goats can provide milk and meat - and pelts.

Hi and welcome from Texas! I'm going to throw this idea out there just because... Coturnix Quail. They are easy to raise. They are mature by 8 weeks and either laying eggs for you, or ready to hop in the freezer and as an added bonus - you can process one in about 5 minutes. I had them for a long time, decided to focus on chickens and now have decided to go back in that direction.

The ONLY drawback is that they do not go broody and hatch their own eggs so an incubator or a small broody hen is necessary. Oh, and a bacon wrapped breast is an absolute treat!
