I am getting 5 piglets in a couple months. These are my first. I don't want to feed pellets. Is there any body out there that has feed custom made?
If so would you share the recipie?
Also, if getting pigs as piglets around 25 - 30lbs I am guessing raising them for about 5 months...
I am wondering if there are any dairy farmers on this site from Ozaukee County, WI?
I was getting milk from a local farmer until someone ratted on him. I am trying to find another farmer to do this with or possibly say pay for the cow and come weekly to collect 4 - 6 gal of milk for cheese...
I am using electric netting for mine. I purchased from Kencove:

And I follow the blog at sugarmtnfarm. They had a good article on modifying your electric netting which is what I did and works great...
I haven been reading many books on animals for raising. And in most I am getting some good ideas or estimates for wintering the animals with and estimated amount of hay or feed needed.
Example: Wintering a beef cow would need approximately 35lbs of hay per day. Just shy of one bail. So...
BeeKissed,
I would say from what I am seeing that is double the price of any thing I have seen at 8 - 10 weeks of age.
I have been talking to some farmers I found around here in WI and they are between $45 - $75 each.
My processor I know. They charge $0.40 lb to process and $25 kill fee...
I am have been looking around for katahdin sheep. I am looking for some that are weaned to raise for meat. I can't seem to find anything on cost of purchasing a weaned lamb.
Can anyone out there tell me a range or find out the market price for just weaned lambs?
Also, what is the pricing...
goodhors,
Thanks for all that great info. Are you in WI? If so where?
Can you point me to a farm in WI that may sell Kahtadin sheep? What the cost may be? And I will really need weaned sheep as I will not be able to bottle feed every few hours.
Again, thanks
I am interested in purchasing a few sheep to see how it they are to raise for meat. I would like to keep them with a few beef cows in 1/4 acre paddocks and move them through the paddocks about every 3 to 4 days.
Can anyone tell me who or where in WI I may find some or a farm that raises them...
These would be no where near where the general public would be.
They would be close to a 1/4 mile away if not slightly further and not in anyone's site.
Thanks
I work for a small family farm (petting zoo type farm) and next year I will be raising chickens for meat and eggs, turkeys, rabbits and quail at the farm to sell out of the admission barn.
The have pigs every year. At least 2. The pen is easily 16 x 16. This year they took them when the farm...
Very nice and thanks.
houndit,
11.96 lbs. I can't get any of my rabbits to that size at 10 - 12 weeks. Mine are in the same range of 2 - 3 lbs. Plus, at 6 weeks mine are moved to moveable pens through out the pasture. So they get pellets all they want plus pasture. Biggest rabbit I have...
I am looking to move my rabbits yet again. I hate cleaning up after them and all the poo. I much prefer them hanging. Before I was so worried about them I had the cages screwed into 2x4's plus chain supporting from the beams and more. Needless to say I am guessing over kill.
I have 12 30 x...
I am trying to find a jersey milking cow with a calf. How would someone go about finding them?
Also, what is the cost like to purchase a cow with a calf?
Thanks
Beekissed,
Thanks for the quick response.
So how many more would I need for 5 acres?
If they can breed at any time when is best time to breed for spring arrivals? What is gestation period?
What do you mean by uncut males? Been castrated? I have no issues putting them in pasture and a...
Hi all,
I am new to this forum Sheep. I have been looking around for info on goats and sheep. I am in Eastern WI between Milwaukee and Green Bay. I have access to currently 5 acres of pasture that a farmer is letting me raise meat chickens on. Also, they are letting me store all my hens for...
I am currently running poultry on 5 acres of pasture. My ideal thing would be to have a couple of sheep run about a 1/4 acre in front of the chickens in a hoop house and electric netting. But the owner of the land for some reason said he would prefer goats.
I have done no research on goats...
Here are some of my kits in their tractors in my yard.
They get grass, weeds, hay, & pellets. I am watching to see how fast they grow out. If not fast enough I will keep them in a cage a week or two longer to put on more weight and then put them in the tractors for about last 3 weeks or so...
