    Using Dairy Goats for Meat

Glad I'm not the only one...we lost our hunting land this year, so I traded one of our Alpines with nasty tasting milk for a Boer doeling. We plan to breed her to our Alpine buck to get a more edible sized offspring. Seemed to make more sense to raise goats for meat than get into a steer. We...

Getting our first meat goat! Care questions?

We have dairy goats (Alpines), my main thing is that the Boer we got is stupid...like dumber than a rock. Makes my Alpines look like Einsteins! We got a doe to breed to our dairy bucks to get edible sized offspring, but wow, I really didn't think there could be that much difference in...

Loaning out a buck for breeding purposes

We leased a buck from about a hundred miles away last year, I had too many does to breed at once. I paid $150 and agreed to keep him for six months. ADGA will transfer his info to your registration (as a lease) so you can register the kids instead of waiting for breeding certificates, charged...

    Butchered our first goat....

Not sure how bucks are in relation to deer, as far as taste? We can't eat or even COOK mature buck venison, so we don't shoot them. We shot a button buck this last year (oops), but his meat didn't taste gamey at all. I've had goat at an indian restaurant, in a curry...you could tell from...

    Where do people get goats?

Just be aware....getting a good, well bred and healthy goat can be pricey! A good milker in AL/GA can easily run $500 or more, young does $250 and up and Boer goats $300 and up! Yes you see $50 goats, but in general it is safer to spend the money to get a tested, clean, registered one as one...

    Where do people get goats?

Post where you are at on here...or join DGI if you're looking for a dairy goat. I know I've got one or two I might part with now, but haven't bothered advertising since I might as well breed them in November. We just got a Boer doeling (we have Alpine dairy goats), but it was a nightmare...

Well...apparently it is! My mistake...now trying to figure out how closely related it is the the Amaranth that costs a fortune in specialty stores!

    What to feed Dairy Goats

We feed Noble Goat Dairy Formula (Purina), but they only get grain on the stand while they are being milked. Other than that, we feed perennial peanut hay twice a day (or you can feed alfalfa hay/cubes) and free fed horse quality coastal bermuda (grass hay), plus all the browse they can stand...

Anyone feed peanut hay to dairy goats?

Ours tested at 17% protein, we get it from near Dothan Alabama. And hey! I am getting a Boer doeling from Renegade (previous poster!) today!!!

    Banding Horns?

We did it with a year old ND doe, no problems with pain with her...however.... She was half wild to start with, and about two weeks after we banded her she freaked out when we were in the pen and banged her head against a stored corral panel...knocked the horn clean off her head and she looked...

Need advice, thinking of adding goats to our family!!

Be sure to take into account what you want them for...milk? meat? pets? We raise Alpines, and I've had Nigerian Dwarves and Nubians..in my opinion, the Alpines we have are more laid back, calmer and quieter than the other breeds we tried, but they are a single purpose goat (milk)..you wouldn't...

    Milking

It also might be beneficial to contact another dairy goat owner in your area who hand milks...most of us welcome new owners who want to try their hand at it first! That way you can see in person what their method is and learn from their experienced goats

    still struggling with milk taste

Can someone explain the Lipase issue? We have a doe who was a FF this year, and her milk tasted AWFUL. Same feed as everyone else (who has good milk), three times negative on milk cultures, super fast chilling, acid washed EVERYTHING every other day, the whole nine yards! I ended up drying...

Salty milk with clean milk cultures?

Alabama state diagnostic lab...No growth at all. We thought sub clinical mastitis too, but nothing. They did catch a case we had last year. I had them run it twice when I got the results, and they still came back negative.

Salty milk with clean milk cultures?

I'll try this question here...we have a FF doe who has a tremendous udder, but had some edema (too much protein, my fault) which cleared up. She is 6 weeks fresh, very slight uneven udder, no lumps/bumps, CAE negative, UTD on everything, all clean tests (TB, Bruc, Johnnes) including milk...

    Grass for goats

I agree with the deer food plot mixes! They usually have peas, turnips, clover etc. I keep wanting to throw some out in our lightly wooded area, but the BF always "borrows" it during hunting season! Mine don't eat "weeds", even in the horse pasture, but they will eat grass (even though some...
