    Working and keeping goats

As mentioned, 10 to 15 minutes per day to ensure that the goats have fresh water and some grain. Our goats are great and give us a much needed AG rating for our land. Build them a house to shelter them from the elements and also build them a playground area to climb on. About 1/2 acre will be...

3 of our 4 dogs in the sprinkler

Great pictures! Our dogs are out each evening and run on 23 acres. They always head to the pond for a dip. It is great that you leave water out for them to cool! :-)

Our goat shelter... in progress *new pics*

If the goats have a decent fence pen then you may not need to add a door. We have 4 ft. no climb fence with a strand of barb wire up around 52" high. Add alot of straw or pine bark for the flooring to keep mud under control. Ours has wood planks to keep things up and draining during heavy...

    Moving with 4 dogs

3 days of travel is one heck of a move! Are you traveling from coast to coast? If it were my animals, I would probably sleep in the car with the dogs during the long trek. I hope they they have plenty of room to roam at the new place. Good Luck!

    Annoying, ANNOYING FLIES!

Tractor Supply has a Tick/Flea/Fly powder that I use to dust the goats and I also dust the goat house and along the window sills. It seems to help somewhat. Alot of dead knats along the window sill in the goat house after I dust.

    help please, sick dog

Our cattle dog starting losing weight very fast and would not eat. We found out that she has diabetes after a vet visit. She is now fine and we give here insulin injections each day for her diabetes. A trip to the vet will get the problem diagnosed.

Bedding in 3 sided shelter? and cleaning manure from yard?

We have 2 alpine/nubian goats. The shelter is a 6 x 8 slant roof shed that opens to a 6 x 8 three sided shed. I add straw bales and pine chips to the shelter every month or so and put the hay bales in the open sided area for feed. The hay quickly is all over the ground but 20 bales gets me...

    Goat stink

Our goats smell fine. :o) Most livestock tick/flea/fly powders will do the trick of masking smells. You get the added benefit of keeping the pests away from them as well... Good luck with giving your goat a bath. :-o

    Dogs and farm/ranch life . . . stupid question

We are on 23 acres and we have several dogs. Three live outside year round (we are in central indiana) and live in very well built dog houses. They are heated with hound heaters in the Winter. The dogs are allowed to free range on the 23 fenced in acres (field fence) when we are home or...

    pygmy goats and alfalfa

Tractor Supply has alfalfa pellets. I think that a 30 or 40 lb. bad is under 20 bucks. Our goats are fenced within an acre area that was mostly an alfalfa field. It is now mostly field grass with alfalfa coming up here and there. :-)

Anyone have goats in an urban area?

You can do what you are comfortable with. If you have good fencing to hold the goats then I would avoid all the red tape. Your only liability would be if the goats got out and damaged the neighbors landscaping. If you use common sense then you should be OK. Many times the zoning rules are...

    converting farm land to pasture

When was the field last planted and plowed? You could fence in an acre or so and get basic cover grass seed down while you build the structure. I seeded a few acres with a standard zero turn mover. I drug a small fence portion behind the mower to work the seed into the dirt. Without ground...

how much do you spend on hay each year?

Here in Indiana, Hay is plentiful and cheap. We are on 23 acres of prairie grass and alfalfa. Local farmers are knocking on our doors to cut it for us. We get free hay and nice cut pastures. :D The goats give us a tax break with AG zoning so they for sure give us good value along with fun...

How does everyone let their goaties free-range?

Ours Free-Range full time. Their goat house is within a 1 acre fenced pasture (4 ft high no climb horse fencing with a strand of barb wire on top). Be careful where you let the goats free-range. Everything is fair game to be chewed/eaten!

how much do you spend on hay each year?

About 1 bale of Alfalfa-Grass hay / week or so for 2 Alpine Nubian goats. I give them a few handfuls of goat grain each day as well. 20 bales gets me through the Winter and they have a 1 acre pen of field grass to graze during the non Winter months. We also have a salt block and mineral...

    Pushy Goats

Super-Soaker! They run about 15 bucks at Walmart. Spray them in the face and chase them away to make sure you mean business. No way they should they have their hooves up on you or head butting. I use the Super-Soaker for the dogs as well as lifting knees to keep dogs down. Goats are...

    How much do you feed?

We Feed a bale/week of Alfafa/Grass mix hay during the Winter months. The general consensus is a flake/goat/day. A large percentage ends up on the ground. I also give a few handfuls of Goat feed grain each day or every few days. :D
