    Retesting herd after CAE scare

Oh, and I did google it. Binged it too. :-) It just didn't seem there was much consensus. Everybody agrees to retest--just didn't find a "standard protocol" for it.

    Retesting herd after CAE scare

Oh, I am definitely having them retested. My plan at the moment is to retest at 4-6 weeks and again at 4 months of last contact with the + doe. I just wondered what standard protocol would be with you guys. I have already put her down. I hated to do it, but I had no proper quarantine pen and I...

    Retesting herd after CAE scare

I have a small herd of Boer and Saanen goats. I test for CAE every year and all goats have always tested negative. Last Thanksgiving, I had a doe get out and was killed by dogs. About 2 weeks later, the vet that worked on her (very nice lady and a friend of mine) called me to say that she felt...

Have not been here in awhile

He is a big boy. He is not yet 2 and is almost 300 lbs. Luckily he is also very good natured. The kids are very big-boned and seem to already have muscle definition. I am pretty pleased with them.

What do you do when you go out of town w/ a freshened doe?

Yes, that is what I meant. :)

What do you do when you go out of town w/ a freshened doe?

I always keep a kid on my does for that very reason. I have to share the milk, but I retain some sort of freedom to come and go. I will be following this one to see what others suggest.

    Will milk production increase much?

In my experience, I have always gotten WAY more milk when I have separated kids at night. Way more. WAAAAAAAAAYY more.

Elci has a very wet behind

There is no blood in it, and it is very clear--not straw colored. It appears to be water. That is why I was wondering about amniotic fluid. She would be preterm, but only about 10-14 days. I hope that kids born that early would still have a chance of survival. I would not be surprised if she...

Elci has a very wet behind

No, I can't be real far off as the buck was only here 6 days. I do know how to check her ligaments. They are still there. She has always developed a bag before kidding too, and she really hasn't done that yet.

Elci has a very wet behind

My Boer/Nubian doe Elci is about 2 weeks away from being due with this years kids. She is truly enormous. She had trips last year, and I think she was about the same size at a month out as she was last year when she delivered. This morning I noticed that her backside was wet and she appeared to...

    Not using craigslist anymore

That's really the thing with selling something though. As soon as you sell it, you don't own it any more. You really have zero control over what they do. I have never understood those people who list things on CL and say "for pets only--not for meat". If you still want to maintain control...

Goat throwing "fits" on the milking stand...

Every once in awhile Elci will do that. (My saanens never do). My milkstand is right up against the wall of the shed. I try to never reward the bad behavior by stopping the milking. I put my head into her flank and push her up against the wall. If she struggles, I push harder. When she...
