    Mosquitos are swarming my rabbits!

This is our first year with rabbits and things have been going fairly well, but it is now summer in Florida, and mosquitos are everywhere. They found the rabbits this week, and now we can't seem to get rid of them. I got mosquito dunks to put in the waterer, but that will just keep them from...

    Found some nigerians, need advice

I found 2 nigerians in milk for sale from a local breeder with a closed herd. One is registered, but is 7 years old. The breeder says she only breeds them once a year and they keep kidding until they are about 10. She is asking $200 for that one. The other is not registered, though the lady...

Getting 2 piglets - essential advice??

Go ahead with the electric fence. We tried without it, but after the third time I spent over an hour chasing piglets, we put some up. The little rascals haven't escaped since. Before they were little Houdinis. Our neighbor said they went in her yard several times when I wasn't home, but came...

    Thinking about dairy goats

How many goats would we need to have enough milk for our little family (me, hubby, son, and a new baby on the way) and some leftover for our 3 pigs? I would prefer to have dwarf goats, just because I think they are cute, but I'm open to the bigger goats too. What do they eat? We feed our pigs...

How much hay does a pig consume?

My pig didn't eat the hay, she only slept in it. Feed and produce she ate by the ton it seemed, but I never even saw her nibble the hay.

show me your pig pens/houses/set ups!

We only had one pig last year and are getting two piglets after the new year, but we just used a lean-to with enclosed sides. We put plenty of hay in it and our girl seemed fine. She burrowed into the hay at night during the winter. We also had a half acre of woods fenced for her to free...

what should I not feed my pigs?

Garlic is a natural treatment for intestinal parasites. It is won't hurt them. I have read that you shouldn't feed them avocados, though I don't remember why.

Bidens alba (aka Spanish needle) is a good high protein green similar to alfalfa. It grows wild here in central FL and they eat it up.

I see. We experienced this with our pig this year, and decided from now on we will get 2 pigs so they won't be lonely.

    How to transport a pig

I believe it has rails. I didn't think about plywood. We could probably get that for the same price as hay bales too!

    Finishing a feeder pig

Lol, I guess I could have but I didn't think about it until after I hit post! :P Our girl gets half produce (mostly lettuce, tomato, and celery scraps, occasional fruit or herbs - hubby is a restaurant manager so he brings home the prep scraps) and half corn/baked potatoes/bread. And as many...

Can I raise a mini zebu without pasture?

Hubby has decided he wants to build a barn, so I guess shelter is settled whether we got a cow or 2 goats. Why wouldn't I want one cow though?

    Finishing a feeder pig

Our feeder pig is off to freezer camp next month. We have been feeding her a combo of grain and scrap produce all year, plus she has a half acre to forage daily. Will the meat be really gamey if we continue this feeding regiment for the last month? Would it be better to switch entirely to...

    How to transport a pig

We have a feeder pig who is ready for slaughter. We have an appt next month with a butcher, but it is about an hour away. A friend offered to let us use her open trailer with hay bales stacked and tied around the sides to haul the pig. She is just shy of 200lbs now and relatively calm unless...

Meat Rabbit Recommendations for a Beginner

We haven't started yet, but we're looking at a California buck and NZ white does. Supposedly they make good babies, hybrid vigor and all. We just got our cages set up, and are working on our watering system. Once that is done we will be getting them from a local farmer we've already talked to.

Raising a pig for meat? First timer!

Our first pig is almost ready for freezer camp. She is a bit over 150lbs, and we are hoping to get her up to 200lbs. It is slower going than we expected - maybe because we let her free range on a half acre. On the other hand, she's very happy. :P
