Uncasterated Pigs - Hoping for no taint

LOL! There is just NO comparison is there?! Folks think we are crazy if we do not eat pork at a restaurant but it is just flavorless. Liz

    How to wean

NO! I have NEVER seen a case of mastitis in a pig. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen but I think it is rare. Once you wean the piglets, the sow just like a human, will swell up & feel like Dolly Parton for a few days but everything quickly shrinks back down into shape. Sows are ready to breed back...

Uncasterated Pigs - Hoping for no taint

Breed & genetics have everything to do with boar taint. I personally do not like tainted pork BUT some folks think it is the best thing since sliced bread! AND there is no guarantee that all three will or will not have taint. Butchering young can prevent it but just like in humans, some can...

Size of pen for meat pig

Pigs are herd animals & really do better with companionship. One pig will normally always be looking to get out whereas if he has a mate to be friends with they will be much more content. IMO the best way to raise pigs is on pasture. Much healthier for them. As for not eating two? Are you sure...

    Pig Identification questions

We ear notched EVERY pig that was ever born here whether it was a cross breed or purebred BUT we had a lot of sows so needed to know who belonged to who. If you are just raising a few pigs for yourself then no identification is needed unless you want to start keeping records. Enjoy your pigs, Liz

    Large Blacks

Large Blacks are superb! We raised them for over 4 years. Yes you have to be wise around all animals BUT LB's are like big dogs. We have little ones who could go out & rub a pigs belly, she would lie down & they could just sit there beside her. The boars were the same also! The meat is...

One more question on breeding pigs

9mths is a good average age. That way she has piglets at13mths old. She will still have some growing to do but that is OK. Liz

Nursing sow with mites, how to treat?

Lice are very common in pigs & incredibly difficult to get rid of permanently. The only permanent cure we found were chickens. Once our chickens started free ranging amongst the pigs the lice disappeared! Yee Haa! You can use Dectomax as an injectible - we used that as we were weaning. Gets...

    Free Ranging?

LOL! All animals are happier on pasture BUT if you are going to pasture pigs then make sure you get a breed that grazes NOT roots. We had hamps once & they rototilled a section of our pasture. NEVER AGAIN! Have also raised GOS, Red Wattles & Large Blacks finding the Large Blacks to be the best...

    Wheat free feed

Most pig feed contains soy & corn & finding non GMO/Organic can be very difficult not to mention EXPENSIVE. Not sure where you are but if you can get rolled barley then that would be a better option than oats. We have fed both & found Barley to be much better. ALSO purchase pigs that do well on...

    How to catch a piglet???

Catching by the back leg is the most effective way to catch a pig. With our Large Blacks who had long ears it was also possible to catch them by their ears. Liz

New piglets looking bony- not enough milk?

This would be my advice PLUS give her another chance. If next time she is not a good mother then make her into sausage & do not keep any of her piglets to breed from. Hope they do well. Sometimes first time mothers don't quite get it & next time around all is well. Just make sure the mamas...

    How to wean

If you have a trailer or somewhere where a big pig cannot get out of, feed her in there then grab the piglets. Even though our Large Blacks were very docile some of them were very protective of their babies. We knew each one personally so knew which ones would chase us. Those ones got to go in...

    New to Pig Farming

Great pics & welcome to the world of pigs :) Premier Netting is absolutely perfect for young pigs as it trains them to electric very fast & effectively. Once they are used to it you can then graduate them to two or three strand polywire. Enjoy! Liz

    Umbilical Hernia?

LOL! Glad all is working well :) She may have a smaller litter due to her young age. You don't want to overfeed her BUT you also want to make sure she gets enough nutrition to enable her to continue to grow. That is one problem with breeding too young - it can stunt their growth. Liz
