One Fine Acre - 2023 4H Steer Project Update

So the show is next week and unfortunately Rudolph slipped and hurt is hoof. Was some swelling around the dew claws ( I guess that's what you call it in cattle). Vet came out and we are treating with dexamethasone. He's doing better already. Vet said to put down the extra shavings to cushion...

Regular whole cows milk is best. Some replacers are better than others.

Need some guidance on baby kids

Enough tries and if they are hungry enough, they will usually get it. But, you do have to force the...

So Rachel's 4H group had a showmanship clinic last week and we got the chance to weigh her steer. He weighs 1114 lbs with about 40 days to go until the show and sale. I looked back and he weighed 816 at the weigh in. He's looking really good. He is a Nash County, NC bred animal. @farmerjan

    Dangerously thin

Do you have a picture of her? How old is she and how many times has she freshened? Is she in milk now or dry? You should still get a fecal done on her. Collect fresh pellets and put them in a baggie and put in the refridgerator to cool down. Keep them cool and take them to the vet. The...

Giver her the best hay you can get, free choice. Free choice means as much as she wants, keep it available to her all the time. Good alfalfa hay would be the best, or 2nd cut orchard grass. If you aren't already giving her feed find a good balanced, goat feed, 16% protein and giver her 2 cups...

    Goat Colostrum?

No. That is a waxy substance that plugs the orifices to keep bacteria out. Colostrum is just thick, yellowish milk.
