    Cocci prevention..chem free?

I have never used them, but I have read that if you use Corrid, supplement with Thiamine. I also read that feed high in Tannin can prevent parasites. Didn't know Oak contained it, but lespideza(sp) hay has it. Here we call it serricia grass hay. giving copper is supposed to help as well. I use...

To shave or not to shave?

I shave my doe. It helps alot with the hair, since i milk by hand. She needs a re-trim every 6 weeks or so. The sound does not faze her.

Do I still expect to get milk if I don't separate kids from their Mom?

Last year I bought my Nubian/Alpine doe and her buck kid came with her( they kept the doe). I left the kid on her and milked once/day. I only got a couple of cups of mik. This year she has 2 kids and I separated them from her at 8 weeks old. I milk her twice/day and get over 2 qts at morning...

Freezing milk in ice cube trays??

Same here with the colostrum. I pour it in the cubes and once frozen, twist it to loosen and run warm water over the back. They pop right out and I put them in a zip lock freezer bag to store. each cube is about 1 oz.

    how often to breed.

I have an Nubian/alpine doe=Lilly Daisy is the one I am talking about here. We got her at an auction, so her breeding is a guess. I think it is dairy because she milks easy and gives a good amount of milk. I am guessing maybe a ND mix, but she is a medium sized goat with good sized teats, so I...

    how often to breed.

Thanks. I will probably do that. I don't want to make a habit of August kids. I stopped milking her in mid-May, so she should be good. One more question: Should I give her another CD&T shot? She already got her annual series in Dec and January.

    how often to breed.

I will start out by saying it is all my fault Daisy had twins in late January. I did not get John separated from her in time and she got re-bred and is expecting in early August. Now, shuld I breed her in late Fall or early winter to get her back on track, or is thatt just too much to expect...

    Quads!!!

Well, right now I have a little extra milk. I started bottle feeding my two kids a couple weeks ago because the boy is leaving and I wanted to gentle the doeling. I am getting almost a gallon a day and using about half of it. Anyone needing it, close to Jackson,Tn, give me a shout.

    Pregnant Again??? WORRIED!!!

My doe got re-bred about a month after her kids were born. I didn't get the buck out in time. My fault. Anyway, I sold her kids when they were 3 weeks old and I milked her up until the middle of May. I wanted to let her dry up before the new kids are born. They are due in August. I noticed that...

    Possbly pregnant doeling. Help!

I have been reading that the weight of the doeling is what is important. I think it's at least 80 lbs for nubians. I don't know about Nd. Also, I read that waiting to breed past 9 months could cause her to have fewer kids.

Kids not growing UPDATE pg. 4

I pulled the 2 kids off Lilly a couple weeks ago, at age 8 weeks because I am selling the buckling and thought that was too young to be completely off milk. Getting them to take a bottle was challenging, but after a few days, they are taking it like pros. First, I put just an couple of ounces in...

    shelter ideas

We are currently using an old shed we already had, but I need to build another one. My advice, something thrown up will work, temporarily, however, our temporary seems to stretch on for awhile. I have in mind a goat house, complete with a couple of stalls for kidding and a common area. When and...

    Udder-ly clueless

I am not really experienced, but I have a Nubian/Alpine doeling that is close to 10 weeks old. You can see her teats, but no udder develop. Also, I would guestimate her weight to be between 35-40 lbs. Her twin brother probably weighs 8-10 lbs more than her.

    Finally Daisy's Babies Arrived!

Cuties! We had our first babies born this year. Our Daisy had 2 doelings and Lilly had one of each. They are adorable and addictive. We went from one goat(Daisy) last Feb to 6 goats today. We sold daisy's girls and Lilly's boy is leaving soon. Daisy got re-bred :( before I could separate the...

    There's gonna be some tears...

Oh, man, that would be hard. We have one that may end up going to freezer camp. If so, I think I will try to find someone to take him for the last week or so and then do the deed for part of the meat.

Mother geat being mean to 2-week old kids?

That doesn't seem normal to me. I have noticed that my doe walks away from her kids to stop their nursing. I think this is her way to control how much milk is in their stomach at a time and to reduce the risk of sickness.
