The family that bought fern welcomed in a gorgeous little buckling this evening but he is severely selenium deficient. His back legs knuckle under, one he can correct and the other he cant without help. We use Selon-e in Canada, which is BoSe im told, selenium and vitamin e mixed. I gave the lamb dose to my nigerians, which was 1/4ml (1/4cc). The kids were between3 and 4lbs. Because his guy is so severe, is the traetment dose of 1/2ml (1/2cc) viable? Hes 8lbs. Dont want to OD him as I know its a small window. Should he give him 1/4ml and then the same again in a week?

Thanks

I personally wouldn't do 1/2cc. I had a kid like that last year, only it was the front legs and the selenium didn't seem to help. I would straighten his legs whenever I was around him to make sure the tendons weren't contracting. I probably should have splinted them. It was about 3 weeks before they straightened out.

Our dose is 1ml/40 lbs, an 8 lb kid should get 0.2 ml if you are using the same concentration.

Watching, so I can learn should we have similar problems in a few weeks. He's gorgeous by the way!

Hi Babs, can you point me towards a good thread on splinting or tell me what you would use?

Yes, 1 ml for each 40 lbs. I just broke it down for anyone reading as you wont want to overdose smaller kids. It should be calculated out for the correct dose regardless of size. It is true that a 40 lb goat gets 1 full ml, an 80 lb goat gets 2ml, but a 60 lb goat should only get 1.5 ml. Accurate weights(as good as you can get) and accurate doses of drugs are more important when the drugs have smaller safety margins. I understand that selenium is one of those.

We had a 2 like that this year. The doe had 3 BIG babies and they were really crammed- causing the issue. I had to splint 2 of them, the 3rd was totally fine.

I would try a splint before you give the Bose, it is very easy to OD the kids. We almost gave the BOSE, I'm so happy I waited!

I will try to find a pic. I used VetWrap and cardboard, pretty simple :)
The one kids' tendons were starting to contract so I slowly worked them until it was in a semi-normal position.

If you do the splint, don't leave it on for more then 24 hours, I like to take it off at 12-18 hours. Check it often to be sure the blood flow doesn't get cut off.

We had one of our vets look...He said we could give the Se but it was from the kids being crammed inside the doe.

Couldn't find any pics, sorry.

Also wanted to add, I'm not saying you shouldn't give the BOSE...I was just talking about our particular case. Did the dam get any? All our girls got an injection right before breeding. With our kids it wasn't as bad as your guy.

Didn't you have to give some to your other kids?

Just remember though, knuckled over doesn't always mean deficiency.
