I've just moved on to a 2.3 ac property that I am turning in to a hobby farm/ranchette with chickens, ducks and eventually goats. We are in a hilly/forested area where there are raccoon, coyotes, bobcats and rarely mountain lions and even more rarely bears.

I am planning on getting a Livestock Guardian Dog, or 2. But I'm thinking I might need something to back them up. But I live in a part of the county that has been designated a "no shoot" zone. I'm trying to find out if there are exceptions to that law, like if a predator is stalking my livestock. But if there are no exceptions, what are my options? Would a pellet gun do much good to scare off a bobcat?

Where do you live?

From what I've seen, most places will allow you to shoot an animal that is an immediate threat to you, your family, or your livestock. It has to be within so many feet and such and such. Also, could you use a bow? I know that you could set traps and call animal control when you've trapped something.

I'm in Santa Cruz County, California.

I will check out the fish and wildlife website and see what I can find, thanks.

so, DNR/ fish and wildlife seemed to only be about hunting, I couldnt really find anything about protecting your own property/ livestock. I sent an email to the local sherrifs dept, hopefully they will get back to me.

I finally heard back from the Sherrifs department, and they said there is an exception to the "no shoot" load for protecting property/livestock/crops.

So, now I guess I need to go to the shooting range, to make sure I will actually be able to hit anything.

2.3 acres is pretty small for even one true LGD
Yup, mine has 5 acres, just enough to keep her busy with all the different animals she has to check on.
Couldn't imagine the mess if I shrunk her pasture to 2 acres and lessened all the animals....

Such a small area, you might be better off with strong electric every 6in to 5ft tall.

:D Try using a silencer on your gun. If you don't want to risk it, talk to your local Wildlife Resource Agency and see what steps you can take legally to help insure the safety of your livestock like trapping or maybe they can assist with the trapping and removal of problematic predatory wildlife.
