I feed inside the hive w/ an old mason jar.

Same here. Inside the hive with an empty super box above the inner cover works well for feeding. I changed from an entrance feeder set up when I read that it can trigger robbing.

I was using an entrAnce feeder with jar, quit that right away when saw ants. Tried pollen pattie in hive, ants got to it....they were just eating away right next to the bees. Took it out when I saw that. Not sure what to do now, but I will try an empty super with the jar.
