New member from Maine

So I guess I'll introduce myself, Sherry from Maine. Currently, researching homesteading and goats at this time. Finally convinced my husband to sell our home (hopefully in April put it on the market) and then buy land or a small house with land. Currently we live in the country with only one acre of land, not enough for what I would like to do. We have lived here 19 yrs so it is a hard decision, harder for my husband. So my goal is to be as self sufficient as we can but still have electricity and water. (hopefully solar someday). My son loves goat milk so we decided to start with goats (two does- thinking we are going to go with nigerian dwarfs) and gardens. My son has already designed the barn that we plan to make out of pallets. We will add chickens (we raised chickens on our acre for a few years). Since I'm just in the information stage of all of this, I'll be kind of quiet and just observing. I may have lots of questions too. So just saying "hi".

Greetings and welcome to BYH from another Texan. Originally from New England and spent a dozen years or so in Maine. Congrats on starting your journey! It's exciting and scary and a bunch of other similar adjectives, all at once... Lots of great folks here who started out the same way as you! Browse around as there's a wealth of info available in the threads. Don't be afraid to ask questions as folks here are really helpful and you'll generally have help in short order! If you'll be here for the duration, you should consider starting a journal in the members section to keep track of everything and keep all us busy bodies... Ummm I mean curious folks happy following along on your journey! Can't believe nobody mentioned it, but we're all a bunch of shameless picture addicts too... If you have some pics you'd be willing to share as you go along, it will give us the pic fix we all so often crave. Glad you decided to join us!

I started reading your journey, over 120 pages and I'm on page 21.... lol... yes, I see lots of friendly people on here that care about everyone. Very refreshing. I'm at a crossroad in life so to speak. Late mid-life crisis maybe.. .. after 11 years at a big bank, my position was outsourced overseas... .... I've been thinking about the whole homesteading life before this so now seems like the time. Yes, I will still need to work and I'm currently applying for jobs like crazy however if we can downsize, I'd love to work part time (except that pesty health insurance issue
Everything happens for a reason so I'm sure it will all work out in the end.

Hi neighbor!!! My sister lives in Sutton/Warner NH so I go down to visit often. Where are you located?

I went and visited a goat farm/small homestead in Maine about a month ago. Before we make our move, I'd love to visit a couple more and find out what they looked for in land, how they got started and get ideas on outbuildings and such. It will all depend what is on the market after we sell our home. I've been looking now however they may or may not be available when we are ready. We also need to be within an hour drive to Portland where my husband works.

Everyone is so friendly on this site..... so happy I found it!!

Thank you for the warm welcome. I lived in Alaska when I was a kid..... many moons ago. Homesteading in Alaska must have its challanges with the short growing period. Do you have greenhouses? We have some cold winters here and I'm trying to get ideas for winter months (growing fresh veggies, feeding chickens and goats). Any advice would be welcomed.

Thank you for the welcome frustratedearthmother and ferguson k!! Lots of Texans on here. Must be all that wide open space that is perfect for animals. I'm hoping to find a blend of woods and fields when we are ready for our move. Hoping to heat with wood from our own land, grow our own food and raise a few animals (goats and chickens to start). Since we both have allergies to dogs and cats... not sure how we will do but I'm thinking since the goats are outside or in a barn we will be alright. I visited a goat farm recently and didn't have any issues.

I already love this site and everyone seems so friendly!!
