Well sounds like I am going to be leaning towards kune kunes, and I kinda agree with Tara lol the weather needs to make up its mind I want to start my garden been waiting for it to decided to stay warm before I plant.

I truly think they are the kewlest breed I've found thus far. Hope they make you and your family happy! :love

My MIL advised me upon residing in this area, don't ever plant the tenders until AFTER June 1st. I have managed to grow corn every place I have lived...course started inside in peat pots, roots not disturbed...cobs are pathetic but man alive, the taste is magical...

My MIL, she's gone now and wouldn't you know...the beans I planted got hit with not one but FOUR days in a row of killer frost in the middle of June--bought $75 worth of seed for a resulting survival of FIVE plants...I can't even ask her, "So want now?" We did get three feeds, so blessed be I guess...better than none? :p

Short seasons here, lucky with 90 days at best, and why yes, snow in EVERY single month of the year...two inches of snow August 2001??

Potatoes do well until hit by frost that stops growth dead (you get like three weeks AFTER killer frost of magnificent balmy +25 to 30C weather to rub salt in your wounds!).

Oats are great...we get enough cool and wet weather you can really SEE them growing! Gave these a whirl one year, half an acre, hand sown outta coupla five gal buckets...WOOT...then I harvested clumps (gave to geese and two old Jacob ewes as treats) and intend on doing this again for the Kunekunes...I have two sections of electronet, portable charger, move coupla posts IN, let the porkers harvest and feast...I mean how perfect is it to let the beasts harvest their feed, earn their keep, utilize the poo right where its good...yeh, don't work stupid, work smarter! ;)

Everything here is tested, tried and strong (smell ain't all it's cracked up to be, eh?)...

Gotta love it, grow ice worms next...go ice fishing I guess...bwa ha ha!

Not jealous one iota on your heat...and I am not so willing to share my snows...but here's a widdle peaky at winter 2013/2014...even "I" reached my snow tolerances that season...LOL

Live in Alberta and don't like snow, yer in the WRONG area! Winter 2013 & 2014...the 2013 year had rain every 2 to 3 days...so winter meant, snow, every two to three days...seems logical.

I thought my husband was a tad overkill in how far back he started piling snow in December...ah no.... o_O

But indeed...we durn near ran outta room...thankful we had a tractor with a snow bucket...he'd have been insanely tired if we only had the gravel bucket in play.

Where to pile snows off roofs once they are level with the buildings? GO wider I guess...

Thing for me, so long as we get bright sunshine, I'm good...and having clear skies is one huge bonus we do enjoy here...lots and lots and lots of clear sunny days...might be minus 40 but hey, sunny and I can deal with the cold. I hate heat...can't work in it. Gotta be working and producing or why be? I came from growing up on the WEsT Coast...ninety days straight of rains, gloom doom and oh help me now. My son's back there, he just wrote to say, 21 days straight with torrential rains, from light to heavy...ah yes, a Coast winter...you don't shovel it, but there's all sorts of issues I don't have to revisit. I am not so sure I'd be happy raising livestock and poultry on the Coast...putrid mud...and while we did take the lesson of roofing the runs to heart here, so many parasites thrive in warm wet conditions...no fleas here unless someone's dog brings them into your house. I could go on and on. I am where we belong indeed.

Pick the correct breeds for your climate and you got helpers and beasties that thrive...our dogs adore the snows...one big puppy playground and when you need a drink? Simply bend down and voila...cool refreshing drink to be had near any place outdoors. I had one girl that got quite miffed if she had no snow coverage--ease of refreshments AND she was potty trained ON snow...for a short bit thar, worried she'd have setbacks to her house training regiment. "What, go here...there's no white?"

Jest be mindful that YELLOW snow is a no go if yer looking for that thirst quenching type coverage, eh! :barnie

A pig will certainly not make any distinction between a carrot and a finger (& can bite one off)! Horses, also.
Neighbor girl when my wife was young lost a finger to a horse that way. And it was HER horse. Glad the OPs kids know to keep their fingers (all of them!) to themselves.

I worked on a horse rescue ranch before and feeding them by hand was actually the lease of our problems. Quite a few would kick you for no reason or try to do worse. There where a few who if you stopped petting them to do something real fast they would bite you. I had one bite my shoulder that was extremely unpleasant. One of the bosses got kicked in his shin from one and broke his leg. You had to be extremely careful with those horses. I was the manager in charge of handling/feeding/medical/and stalls maintance. There was always plenty to do and safety reminders even more so when we had kids come out.
