i am new to pigs. I got this little guy a couple weeks ago. Happy, eating and pooping well. The scrotum seems enlarged to me. This is as big as it gets, but each side varies in size, smaller at times, looking like this other times. It is compressible, no tension. Is this a scrotal hernia? Will this impact fertility? Concerns/advice? THANK YOU!

I only raise feeder pigs. Currently have 2 Hereford Hog boars. Boars have big balls. They really stick out there. Most of the time, uniform in size. I can't see much of the thing you are asking if it is a hernia. Can you contact the breeder you got him from?

I love this site for pig information,

I have a couple of mature Guinea Hog boars and they don't exactly look like that. They are the same size and shape and are very symmetrical. As Bay mentioned - I'd send that pic to the breeder and ask for his/her opinion.

That is a scrotal hernia. I am not sure on its impact on fertility but I personally wouldn’t use him for breeding. While there are several factors that go into a scrotal hernia genetic is one of those factors. If you plan to sell offspring for meat, there is the added difficulty of castrating ruptured piglets (doable, but if you’re not careful you will have problems). If you don’t castrate when it comes to slaughter time there is a risk of meat damage as you have small intestine where it aught not be increasing the chance for contamination of meat. Plants generally penalize for ruptures for just that reason.

I’ll check out the site, thanks.

The size of each side of the scrotum varies, so I wondered if hydroceles or hernias...Will monitor for now as he’s otherwise doing great.

Castration and hernia repair scheduled with vet. He’s a sweet boy, so now he’ll just be a pet. Thank you, everyone!

Pigs make good pets. They are smarter than a dog, but dog people don't like to hear that...…..including me! LOL How about posting a picture of his other end?

Here’s the cutie! Such a sweet personality!
