Babies Born Today: Color Guesses?

Just had a litter of 9 born this morning by my seal rex doe! She was bred to a gold tipped steel agouti buck. There was 7 black skinned kits and 2 pink. Any guesses at what colors might come out of this litter? Ill try and post pictures as they grow.

I would guess sable are white, the blacks could be black or gt steel, or caster (check ears if they are white they're probably steel, if ears and bellies are white then Castor).

This is one of the color crosses of which a rabbit judge friend of mine would say, "DON'T DO THIS!" because so many of the possible results are non-showable - but if you are breeding to a Steel, you probably don't care about that, anyway.

Your most likely results will be Chestnut and Steel, though you may get funky combinations that are genetic Steels but which look like Blacks. Of course, they might be genuine self Blacks, too.

The thing that makes me curious is the two pink babies. Unless these are some variation on Orange (which shouldn't be possible with a Steel parent), they are probably Ruby-eyed Whites, which is something that a Seal can't give birth to. In other words, if these babies are REW's, their mother can't be a Seal ( a Seal has two copies of the shaded gene [cchlcchl], and therefore cannot have the REW gene [c]). If these babies turn out to be REW's or possibly Himi's (Pointed Whites), their mother has to be some color other than Seal.

@Bunnylady The only,other buck I have is a REW. What colors would that combo produce possibly? I was thinking about keeping a buck from this litter. Which would be the best option from just a color perspective?

Also @Bunnylady the white kits have weird spots that are discolored...does that mean they will be broken in their coat color?

The problem with REW breeders is that, while you know what they have at one gene locus (cc at the C locus), you have no idea what they may have at the A, the B, the D, etc. Particularly since I have my doubts about the color of the doe, I couldn't begin to guess what you might get, other than REW's (and that is based on her having REW's in this litter).

Broken is dominant, so if it's there, you will see it. Since both parents are colored and clearly not Brokens, none of the babies can be Broken, either. The spots are more likely to be urine staining.
