Ok, so I have a sweet, mild mannered pot belly pig named Portly. I also have one named Jumbo..he’s pretty shy and mello. Last week we added a feeder pig..but he’s in quarentine so they haven’t seen each other. So, no issues. The next day, Thursday, we bought a Juliana mini pig,.,which is not going to work out, very sadly, for a number of reasons...mainly because the seller lied. Anyways....Piper, as she was named..was outside getting some air today...and Portly, came around quick. She was on that tiny pig so fast! Portly is about 100lbs..and Piper...maybe 16? I was terrified!! Piper got away...but Port kept up the chase.. I ran, etc.. I called my husband, who ran out...it was a mess. This was all in the the ice and snow. jumbo was just milking around like it was nothing. These pigs were not supposed to be near each other. I have no clue how Portly moved that fast! Anyways, we got it settled. Piper had scratches on her side and was shaken up pretty bad, us too. Port was scolded and put back in her barn.

So....how...in the future, do we introduce pigs? I’ve done it with ducks, dogs, chickens, goats, roosters, rabbits and I’m sure many more animals, but this sweet pig, Portly...was a meany! Do we need to wait until piglets are full-sized? We have decided that mini’s are probably not a good fit for our farm. This was terrible. We need more sturdy pigs.

We had two. Mini pigs last year, was very happy to give them away !
When introducing two pigs, it has helped us to keep the them separated by a tight ...strong ...no climb fence, let them become used to each other , watch how the interact together....after a few weeks move them both to a new neutral area and see how they are, if it works out , great....now you have a goat, sheep. Dog, chicken or pig area for babies set up..?
Don't move one pig in with the other in their space, it can get ugly fast.....
Just my two cents worth of pig experience 🥴🐷

All of my areas are separate , I just meant that I had experience with introducing those animals and it all went great...no fighting..no blood...:( ...:).
So, you didnt like the mini’s either? The high maintenance? She’s very needy. My husband pointed out right away that I really don’t have time for this type of animal. I have well over100 animals now and I do the work...I love it, but I am busy. It’s weird though, because I spoke to a man a month ago for an hour...he did want to sell me two pigs..but he acted as though they were very easy pigs...just like my pots...which I adore. Until today Portly had never shown any aggression.

Ok, so it’s just like chickens, and ducks..the look but no touch..introductions....it’s a pain...but doable...can we ever move the new feeder pig into live with the pots..or does he need to live in his own space beside their barn after quarantine? We didn’t buy two feeder pigs...even though I told my hubby they do better in pairs..but he said we couldn’t two..and he wasn’t raising a pig for someone else....stubborn man...so.. I hate to think he will be stuck alone his whole life.

 were you refering to the single feeder pig? Or the husband who wouldn't let you get the second? :hide

The feeder pigs life is not a long life, by the time he needs mental health counseling he should be at freezer camp....and that will make everybody happy, just let him live within eyesight of your PBP......and feed him very well 🐷

Ohhh that’s awful..I reread what I wrote..my poor husband....is it bad I’m chuckling? Oops

on a different note...my pot my belly pig...is it possible that now she knows the two new pigs are in the other barn...she is coming in there to get at them again? My dear hubby does not do the farm work...but he has been coming out to check on his beloved feeder pig..and it’s fouling things up! Tonight it was after dark when I was doing chores so I just asked him to go give water to my pot belly pigs. He left the fence open!!!:he
So, in comes Portly...which is very unusual for her even to move after dark..let alone in the cold...i was feeding my goats and just didn’t have time! I had my husband lure her back out..but..this man has thre bachelor degrees and a masters..is a contractor..and I have to give him step by step instructions on how to handle every animal task!! poor Guy...he really is the best... anyways..does Portly remember that there are two new pigs on the farm and she’s still trying to get at them? Or was she just feeling spunky?

No... I have the two new pigs there...one is my new feeder pig..which will eventually go out next to Portly’s pen..the other is a mini pig..in an extremely insulated box...very large..as they are not meant for for cold...I just bought her and she is wayyy more delicate and high maintenance than I ever read. I’m trying to sell her.

I would keep the PB's away from the feeder pig. Sounds like Portly doesn't want to share the farm with another pig.

Pigs will always fight when they meet even if they are same sex not too bad at all if different sex. Try to never introduce two different sized pigs. When I move my sows back and forth from their home pens to the farrowing room even though they all know each other extremely well and most have been raised together there is always a day or so of establishing pecking order all over again. Then when they are done weaning their piglets and they go back to their home pen to their room mate those two will fuss for a couple days as well until they find their groove again. If you have two pigs that are different sizes in together you'll have issues with bullying for food and other problems. If you are introducing two pigs of same size then they at least have a shot at working things out. I even keep my boars two to a pen but only same sized together. One time little hercules(mini pig boar 12 inches tall) got into Boartus and gus's pen (BIG PIG BOARS) and he was injured right away cause Boartus mounted him for dominance and hurt his rear legs. It took him weeks to walk normally again. Its easiest when two sows are close to farrowing and they know each other or when they're evenly sized or even the same ages if not same sized. Hope that helps.
