I planted Giant Pink Banana Squash out of curiosity. I wanted to make pies and have something for sheep treats. I had 3 plants. They sprawled out, went over the fence and up a tree. I picked 6 squash, not bad. I made pie and pumpkin bread, delicious! After a hot dry summer, we finally got rain. The vines revived and grew more squash! Lots more! I picked them and brought them in to cure. Made more pumpkin bread.

Would y’all believe the GPBS is going for a THIRD round? There’s probably 10 out there about 15” long and growing every day. Frost is very late this year, but sooner or later it will show up. I don’t think round 3 will mature before frost comes, so I’ve been giving the sheep treats. I chop one up in small pieces and give to the sheep. They love it!

There is so much! When we get tired of pies, it will be the sheep’s turn. They get the seed pulp and peelings and look for more.
These are the ones in the house, feeding sheep the ones in the garden until they run out.

Farmers used to raise mangel beets for winter feed and used a beet shredder. These squash can make a lot of feed, for people and livestock.
@Beekissed i thought about you. If you want seeds, PM me your address.

Now there is about 20 of these on the vines! I can't feed them fast enough to make a dent in them. The chickens get one, it takes several days to a week for them to eat it. The sheep get one almost every day-we were gone for Thanksgiving, but they will get a BIG one today. There is a frost coming Monday night, supposed to get in the 20's so will have to pick them. I think I will stack them on the screened porch and feed them out daily until gone.

@B&B Happy goats these would make good pig feed for next year! LOL

We don't call sweet potato pie pumpkin, we love our sweet potatoes and give them full credit. LOL

Pumpkin bread really?

We northerners make zucchini bread.

You Southerners will put pumpkin in anything or any squash or yam or potato and call it pumpkin hahaha😂😂

We make zucchini bread too. The canned Libbey's pumpkin is really butternut squash. So what's wrong with growing squash for pumpkin pie? And it does make good bread.
