My husband and two boys just moved to Southwest Iowa from the East Coast. We now live on a 30 acre farm that is completely flat fields besides the house and a 30'x62' workshop. We are excited to build our farm from the roots up with the pretty much blank slate we have to work with. Our first step is going to be installing proper perimeter fencing, a new duck coop and a new barn all starting this spring. The goal is to get the farm setup and ready to go before we bring too many animals onboard (already have 3 dogs and some ducks). I grew up on a farm and have taken care of just about every type of farm animal out there growing up, but it's been awhile since I've taken an active part in running a farm hence why I joined this forum to brush up and learn something new. Hopefully by the end of the year we will be ready to go for horses and sheep. I am just dying to get some Icelandic sheep and will definitely be asking some questions about them on here. I think that's about it at the moment:)

Welcome to BYH!

Curious why you are thinking of Icelandic sheep?

That is one exciting adventure that you are starting.

How old are your boys?

I have 5, ages 12 to 22.
Thank you! My boys are 2 and 4:) As far as sheep go, I'm wanting a hardy multi-purpose breed. I would also love to try my hand at milking sheep which would be just for my family (nothing large scale) and at the end of the day I have always wanted a couple Icelandics. I was looking at some East Friesian x Awassi as well and I haven't ruled them out either. Some of my family had katahdins, my aunt and uncle especially who lived down the road from where we use to live had anywhere between 50 and 100 at a time. I like Katahdins, but I really want something more multi-purpose.

We were just talking over on the social coffee thread about milking sheep.

Make sure they have easy to milk teats...

But I REALLY like sheep milk cheese! (No, never made my own, never owned sheep)
