I was looking into gettibg a mini pig. Sadly the one i was getting that was coming already castrated died. So I looked into getting one from a different place. I found a new piglet however he is not going to be castrated and the price went up a hundred dollars. So I was wondering if pne of my experienced pig farmers could castrate him for me. Anything would be helpful thanks!

I don't see why he couldn't be castrated.

Castration is pretty easy (I use the cut method), but then.... I have never done a mini pig.

I did further research and found that he has to be neutered by a vet, because he a potbelly. I found a nice and cheap vet in my area that will do it for me.

Why did it say a vet had to do it?

Just curious.
It said that potbellies testes are located in the abdomen. So you have to cut into the abdomen to get them out, there for they cannot be taken out by a farmer.

The only time a pigs testicles will be in the abdomen is if it didnt drop, any breed can have the issue but it is rare. Normally potbelly pigs testes are the same place as all other pigs testes and can be done just like any other pig. At 8 weeks old though a vet is the best call.
I read up on it.... trying to find an informative article....

Sounds like the pot bellies are WAY more likely to herniate out the hole from the testicle. So, as a matter of course you are supposed to suture.

I also hadthe impression that the pot bellies had more instances of testicles that don't drop.

Crazy.

Thank you for all the new information. I'm going to stick with the vet neutering him. Its a fair price and I want to taje as little risks as possible

They do have a higher likelihood of herniating, as far as I understand it that has to do with potbelly pigs typically being neutered at much older ages then other large sized pigs. Meat pigs are suppose to be neutered before 2 weeks of age most potbelly pigs are not neutered until after 8 weeks of age even though it is recommended to be done before 5 weeks of age. I think it has something to do with being so tiny and cute, people just them to "grow up more" before getting them fixed.....most people with pet pigs do not have other pig or livestock experience.

As far as more testicles not dropping, I'm really unsure. Us and our two friends have never seen it happen and we have had between us 20+ litters now. All the breeding pigs for the past 6yrs have been mini or mini potbelly crosses though so that could very well influence things.

It's a good choice at his current age. Pigs do remember things and trying to neuter them at 8+ weeks old they will remember it and who did it. I have never been part of the neutering procedure for the pet pigs we were breeding because of this, as I was the one in charge of making them like people.

I'm sure you will love and enjoy your pet pig and hope all goes without a hitch.

The reason we have to get ours done so late is because the breeder we are getting him from said he will not be ready to go to a new home until he is 8 weeks old. She also doesn't know how to do hm herself and she has no one that knows how. We don't want to get him done then bring him back because I'm not sure of ahe wpuld give him to somone else since he's is neutered. (Btw I mean no disrespect I'm just stating why we are doing it at 8 weeks) And thank you, I hope everything goes well too!
