Hi Herd -

I can't say I own the sheep and goats, but I share the land with our neighbors who do own them. We live in Grants Pass, OR, just outside of town. There are 16 sheep + lambs, 9 of which are ewes, 3 goats, 2 of them, nannies - both expecting; and a pony and a horse, and a few ducks. I am pretty sure neither of us knows much about lambing and kidding since both are coming our way fast. Also name a subject and likely we do not know it. My neighbor grew up with goats, cows, sheep in a foreign country and they didn't use vets, worm their animals, or tag them, and me? Well all I have to do is look at the internet and see that I am out of my depth. That said, I am excited to see what their plans are next! Oh, they also have chickens but we feed/water them and clean their coop. Now we'll be helping with the milking and lambing/kidding.

Wow!

Sounds exciting!

I hope everything runs smoothly.

Do you have a lambing/kidding kit?

Luckily you can look up you tube videos and watch what is normal and abnormal, so you are a bit better prepared.

Also, welcome to BYH! :welcome

A kit!! ok I can check with the neighbors. I told them all about the vet/worming/ colic for the horses etc. I am sure they will take that to heart. The awesome thing is they came with ear tags 'no scrapie.'

Part of our fence went pfft and they get into the neighbor's however they are thrilled to have free brush mowers too!

Been reading/watching YouTube but had not yet seen the lambing/kidding kit. THANK you so much for that info!!

Oh... I don't think that there is a kit you can buy... but maybe there is...

I meant just gather together what you might need.

So I gathered vitamin B paste, probiotic paste, calcium magnesium paste (just to use if needed). Calcium supplement specifically to feed a day or so before kidding. Lube, clean feed bags to use as a tarp, easy wash lap blanket size fleece blanket, junk ok if ruined towels, clean scissors, disinfectant, heating pad that will stay always on that is fit into a huge ziplock and duct taped securely closed, and a kid puller (looks like a huge plastic wishbone with a metal cord) to pull out a stuck kid.

Keep it all in one spot where you can find it.

Most of the stuff I never used... like I have never needed and never used the kid puller. But think it only cost 20 bucks, and it was nice knowing I had it on hand.

Oh good, I was about to ask the neighbors if they had one LOL.

I read about using hands or a rope around the legs and that sounded easy enough. Never touching the jaw or it would break. Hands to reposition. <-- what I learned yesterday. I will check into the kid puller.
