Our current barn has a dirt floor and is 24' x 36' whch is too small although we manage. We don't have a tack room in it though. We do have a milk shed that has a concrete floor and is 10' x 20'. And another "tool shed" that is 12 x 24'. It has a wooden floor. Since we are in southern California we don't have a problem going back and forth to fetch tools and equipment from either of those sheds which are right next to the barn - until this year it has not rained much. ;) I love the concrete floor because it keeps the dirt to a minimum but isn't good for livestock.

Our new barn in Texas has a 10' x 10' "tack room" in it that is open on top to the rest of the dirt floored barn which means that it gets really dirty, but at least is storage space separate from the livestock area. When we run the electric to the barn we will be able to keep a small fridge in there for livestock meds and water bottles for when we are working in the barn. Then there is another 12' x 20' shed by the house that has a concrete floor which we will probably use as a tool shed/ workroom with a workbench.

The problem with ll these eat storge spaces is that they continually get messed up by other family members who don't want to follow my labeled drawers and bins to figure out where to replace the tools they borrow! :somad And I don't have the time or energy to continually follow these family members around and clean up after them. The smartest thing I did when we tool that load of stuff back to Texas last September was to make sure to take back a set of shelving as well so we cleaned out the tack rom, put the shelves together and then put everything on the shelves. Luckily, DS1 is as much of a neatnik as I am. ;) I leave it to your imagination as to who the aforementioned messy famiy members are.

I am my messy family who ignores all of my careful planning and organizing.. Most of my mess is caused by me not having time to follow myself around & pick up all the junk I just put down after using instead of putting it away.
:smackI aggravate myself half to death most days

I have been in the put the tool down and forget about it type. Then when I want it I can't find it, take forever to find it (if I find it) and got REALLY frustrated. Now when I start to put something down I stop myself and put it away -- saying to myself it will take less time to do that than to hunt and search. I'm not perfect but I am getting better!!

@canesisters , I LOVE this thread! This is exactly what I need to do in my basement. However, there’s no way I’m posting “before” photos of my basement! :gig

You have given me the incentive to really get after things here.... what I can do.... and to document it... May not post pictures ahead... once I ever figure out this smart phone with the camera.......I like my "real camera".... but the phone is handier..... but I need to get things done... Ankle and knees have really slowed down the momentum... and the way the one knee has taken so long... plus not losing any weight no matter what I have been trying.... but it is time to get back after things and quit making excuses to not do some of what I should be doing..... and to stop waiting for DS to "follow through" on all the "good intentioned promises" that he offers to do and then forgets and gets too busy to do.... or GF has projects that just absolutely HAVE to take priority and be done NOW.....

@farmerjan this makes me smile - Get After It Girl!!! I'm looking forward to cheering you on.

I've had a little slowdown in the barn cleanup. Had to work until 5 every day this week so far & there is a 'garbagey' smell in my kitchen. I've spent 3 days trying to find it.
emptied the trash
cleaned the drains
cleaned out the fridge
nothing in the pantry to smell
checked the jars of canned stuff
even opened all of the water-glassed egg jars - not a pretty smell but not what I'm hunting
:idunno
It kinda does SEEM to be coming from the general area of the fridge... I guess tonight will be pulling it out and seeing if anything is behind/under it?

This makes me think of the “dead mouse” smell that will hit us when we are halfway down the basement stairs, if the traps have caught anything. I wouldn’t be surprised if you find a dead mouse behind your fridge.

Hopefully it will just be actual garbage. Maybe the cats knocked something under there.
