Glad he's still Lucky.

Maybe he can eventually replace your rude ram...

Nope. Besides being small and possibly stunted, you don’t keep a bottle ram. They have no fear of you, that translates to no respect when their balls take over their brain and they want to assert their dominance over you.
Ewenique is a grade mixed breed ewe. I’ve kept daughters and her genetics are in my flock, being upgraded to registered. It takes 3 generations to even be eligible for full registration, so I have no incentive to keep her ram lamb as a stud ram. If Lucky survives, I will castrate him and keep him as a pet.

That makes sense.

I've been active on BYC since before I started building my first hoop coop in 2023. There are conflicting views on how to raise roosters, but after personal experience (including getting flogged/spurred in the face) I'm firmly in the "don't make them a pet" camp. My current roos respect me, get out of my way, and I don't do much with them except occasionally offer a tidbit.

When the hormones started flowing I got the tough guy stance and dance a few times, which I completely ignored. It confused them. Zack decided to attack my legs, and I stood there, didn't react (a young bantam, it didn't hurt me) and he's not tried again. Silas slammed into my legs while I was treating Tamar's injury, but it didn't hurt me. I looked at him and in a quiet voice said "What do you think you're doing?" He also looked bewildered. No problems since. I'd take him out in a heartbeat if I felt it was necessary.

But you can't ignore a 200 pound ram, I understand the need for defense!

Yeah, like the 16-1800 lb bull that DS's GF made a pet out of, and now has no respect for people... I wouldn't turn my back on him... he takes a notion and will just go right through you. Don't think he is mean exactly, just no fear or respect.... Hate him because of it. I have bulls I can scratch the sides of their head and such, but they are not pets. A good loud voice and show of "authority" and they will back off, turn away.... he does neither.

Exactly. Lucky will lose his balls before he even knows what they are for.

I took one look at his sister and got a bucket of water. Her butt was packed with poop, it’s fairly clean now, not perfect but at least she can poop freely.

Lucky last night.

I got pictures, not great but at least you can see her markings.
Haven’t come up with a name for her yet, it needs to be special. At Ewenique’s age, these might be her last lambs, plus she usually has twin boys. I’m thinking Glory or Dallas. Thoughts anybody?
