Your best bet is to ask your local vet as they will know if they are seeing higher cases of any diseases. Personally I vaccinate my horses in the spring and it won't hurt them if you boost them now instead of in the fall.
Personally if it were me, I'd put a "heads up" call to the vet and explain the situation so the vet can give you signs to look for in case they start feeling bad. Sometimes things work out ok, but it never hurts to keep the vet informed in case you need them.
I do competitve trail riding and my horses are trained to stand tied to a trailer all night while camping. And if you tie them right they CAN lay down. At my last competitive trial ride my mare scared me because she was lying completely flat out like she was dead and didn't move when I touched...
There are so many things to mention that it's really better if you find a local horse stable or group of horse owners ( ie like a back country horsemans organization or a trail riders group) and start finding local experienced people.
Basic starters
Grooming kit (brushes, curry combs, mane and...
It's not JUST his coat, you stated he's lost approximately 100 lbs. Any time a horse looses weight and isn't getting enough of the right nutrition for what ever reason, you will see it in their coat as well as in other areas. Hair is made from a specific protein. If he's not getting enough...
Well before changing his diet, you need to rule out medical issues.
Teeth, worms, anemia, sand (dirt) in the gut etc there are many things that could cause the weight loss so your best bet is to first call the vet.
If your horse still has a problem and it's been ruled as dietary, your vet is...
Re you refering to European Shetlands or American Shetlands? Because American Shetlands tend to be finer boned and more "horse" like then the European bloodlines. Additionally not all Miniatures are as "fine" built as the one you posted a photo of. It depends on the parents of your gelding...
Has anyone processed Muscovy ducks for meat? I just finished putting my first two in the Freezer. My question is about the "plucking VS skinning" I've seen a lot of different comments all over the net about Muscovy's being harder to pluck and many people just skin them. I had that same...
Hair is protein and Keratins the same as his hooves only not as hard. If he's been lacking in the proper nutrition prior, then his body is possibly still trying to re allocate the nutrition to the right spots. Instead of going to grow hair, he may be using the new found nutrition to gain...
I've read both this and the thread on rearing. I"m gong to agree with Becky. Quit working the horse, get her to the vet and give her a rest. There is something going on with this filly and making her work with a "soft knee" is setting her up for failure.
Actually yes. I purchased a young stallion that soon became a gelding at my house and he was the most obnoxious cribber I ever had. He even cribbed on wire fences. I had him check by the vet and treated for ulcers and modified his feeding and all kinds of things. but he kept right on cribbing in...
looks like she was a black gone gray pinto. The Blue eye and the snip are indications she possibly carries the Splash (pinto/paint) gene. The white long the back and over the neck indicate she possibly carries the Tobiano gene. I'd call her a pattern a tovero. She looks like a baby when you got...
