    LGD Rescue

If anyone is looking for an LGD to rescue, there is an ad on craigslist with a shelter that has 4 Maremmas in need of homes. These are not my dogs, I'm just passing on the info. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/grd/3999457321.html - bob

Just another update. So far so good, digging a lot of holes and no incidents with the auger. For a bottom end Home Depot model, it really seems to be working well. - bob

Auger update . . . We called the manufacturer about the prob w/ the auger. Their first suggestion was our oil/gas mix was incorrect, which we assured them it wasn't, as we mixed as directed with the bottle that came with it. the next suggestion was that the soil was too hard. But it wasn't...

Well, this is the auger I got http://www.homedepot.com/p/Powermate-8-in-43-cc-Earth-Auger-Powerhead-PEA438/202532639#.UdkB7VNQ0oI It was not up to the task. :( The engine seemed to have enough power, but once the drill started biting in, it would slow down. But it didnt feel like the engine...

Thanks everyone for the input. Sheep girl, the peeler poles are $7 more than the 4X4s here. Bubba I had not seen that manual auger before. If I didnt have so many to do, I may have gone with that. I did end up getting a gas powered single person hand held auger today. I had found a larger...

I'm a brand new "hobby farmer" and I have about 1500 feet of field fencing to put in. I'm planning on using 4X4s and T posts. The area is all downslope, some of it fairly steep. I dug one hole with a manual post hole digger, and thought to myself that I did not want to do that 500 more...

I live in a "no shoot zone."

I finally heard back from the Sherrifs department, and they said there is an exception to the "no shoot" load for protecting property/livestock/crops. So, now I guess I need to go to the shooting range, to make sure I will actually be able to hit anything. - bob

    tags and other government regulations

I am starting a small hobby farm, and may be getting 3-4 sheep in the near future. I've been trying to find info online regarding government regulations that I should be aware of regarding sheep (I live in california, we LOVE regulations out here ;) but I am having a hard time finding any...

    anyone have Soay sheep?

Thanks everyone for the input. We are a very small "hobby farm" so I'm not really, looking at the sheep as a money maker. Though if they get rid of all the poison oak on the property they will be worth it! - bob

    anyone have Soay sheep?

I may have the chance to get some Soay sheep. These would be my first sheep, currently we have chickens and ducks. From what I have been reading, Soay are a little more "low maintenance" than other sheep or goats. Does anyone here have experience with them? Do you think they would be OK for...

Where do you get your fence materials?

I'm going to be putting up some field fencing, and have been seeing a wide variability in pricing. It's almost twice as expensive here in California as in places like Colorado. It might almost be cheaper to ship it half way across the country than to buy it here, as crazy as that sounds. So...

Do you have pet insurance? (oh and did I mention I just got a puppy?)

I took my new LGD pup to the vet for her first check up today, and he recommended pet insurance, and gave me a voucher for a free 30 day trial from a company called "trupanion." I have not gotten pet insurance before, does anyone here use it, and specifically any experience with this company...

I live in a "no shoot zone."

so, DNR/ fish and wildlife seemed to only be about hunting, I couldnt really find anything about protecting your own property/ livestock. I sent an email to the local sherrifs dept, hopefully they will get back to me. - bob
