    Who's hatching right now?

Cute. :) Right now I have about 25 Ancona duck eggs in the 'bator. They've been in there a week now.

Big Head from Photosensitization -- any experience?

I hope your girl is feeling much better! Southern sent me a note since I had a similar situation last year with a young yearling ewe. In my case, however, my girl's neck would swell (identical to bottle jaw) whenever I put her in with my ram for breeding. (There were about 12 other females with...

    EllieMay's journey towards self-sufficiency.

We're starting our lambing season. Didn't start off smoothly. Yesterday I had a ewe with a water bag presented. I waited for the lambs to be born, but nothing happened all day. This morning I took my ewe to the Vet, and she was only dilated at 2. Vet had to do an emergency C-section...

    Stolen Goat Update: >>>FOUND<<<

Yep! News got around FAST. Her goat was FOUND! I suspect the thieves discovered they were caught on video plus the fact that EVERYBODY was out to find this goat, so they let him go. Or maybe he escaped on his own. Who knows? The good news is he's been found! Here's my friend's post on Facebook:

    Stolen Goat Update: >>>FOUND<<<

For those of you who do not use Facebook, I am posting this here. My friend in VA had someone come to her property, jump the fence and STEAL one of her goats. He's young, newly purchased and she's afraid someone might have just taken him for food. She wants to get the word out ASAP in hopes that...

    EllieMay's journey towards self-sufficiency.

All the puppies have gone to their new homes. I really do miss the little puppy stage. I kept a male for myself and weighed him when he was 6 months old. He weighed 110-lbs. They grow so fast! Anyway, I posted a few pics of Daddy on Facebook and thought I'd post 'em here, too. :D =D

    EllieMay's journey towards self-sufficiency.

Mom and pups are all doing fine. She is an awesome mother; very attentive to her pups. They are now two weeks old, so I weighed them all and gave them all a mild wormer and took pics: Girl "A" 4.4 lbs Girl "B" 4.8 lbs Girl "C" 4.15 lbs Boy "D" 4.18 lbs Boy "E" 5.14 lbs Boy...

    EllieMay's journey towards self-sufficiency.

Chula had her puppies on New Year's day! We had sub-zero temps, so I hung a heat lamp in the barn for her and the pups. It kept the air temp above freezing. She has been such a good mom! Mom and Dad are both registered Turkish Kangal dogs. Here are some photos taken at one week old: Girl "A"...

It was a small lamb... maybe 70-lbs. I forgot to weigh him before he left. The butcher sliced the chops thick. I have a couple more that I'm trying to put some weight on; their butcher app't is not until mid-January.

    Junkprospectors - mini-farm journal

Nice job on the milking stand! :thumbsup I'm thinking about getting a turkey or two next year. Hubby shot a wild turkey during turkey season and it's been in our freezer ever since. He pulled it out last week and cooked it. To my surprise, it was very good. I thought it would be tough and...

    EllieMay's journey towards self-sufficiency.

So we took our first lamb up to the butchers and ate our first lamb chops off our farm! DELICIOUS!! I think the feeling knowing that the meat did not come from a sick animal certainly made eating meat raised on the farm more pleasurable. I hate going to the sale barns and seeing all those sick...

I agree with SG. I would leave them in. You just don't really know what will become of the sheep years down the road.

Do your hair sheep lambs ever start off wooly?

I have one Katahdin ewe that gets so wooly that you can't feel her skin. It's very thick! When she was a lamb, I had my doubts that she would ever shed that thick hair. To my surprise when she was a year old, she shed off so slick that she was very, very nice looking (and she's all black).
