Family Farm Friendly LGD Breeds? Opinons, Advice, Experiences??

I have the goofiest Great Pyr ever. Even the vet agrees. INka is a great guardian and does the appropriate guarding, late night barking, and takes good care of the family. My vet will sit down with her face to face. He says she is the only Pyr he has ever felt comfortable doing that with...

    Why ivomec injectable?

Hi I have a llama and some alpacas for a few months now. I know they need to be vaccinated against the Menigineal worm with Ivomec and I know the dose for my animals. My question is - why does it have to be the injectable and not an oral dose? My llama is in good health but it is so hard to...

I have a chance to get some alpacas??

HI A local lady is dispersing her herd. I have a chance to purchase some healthy, VERY well adjusted alpacas at a reasonable price. I was thinking of only getting 2. Is this enough? I have a guardian llama as well. The price is right and I can either have 2 boys or a boy and a girl. I...

Nigerian 6m doe wont stop limping

I have a 6 mo old Nigerian dwarf who stepped on a metal tack about 10 days ago. I think I found it quickly and it did not appear to go further than the hoof. The hoof looks normal, no swelling, blood or ooze. The hoof looks fine. She will let me touch it. However, she continues to lift the...

    Fencing Suggestions

I use light livestock fencing from http://www.lightlivestockequipment.com/ The company is great, customer service excellent and product came fast. I use the mesh fencing 4' tall. It is still metal but even my smallest Nigerian kids can barely get their heads through. They cannot escape...

2 or 4 better for new herd?

HI I just got 2 young Nigerian doelings. I have an opportunity to get 2 9 week old top line doelings as well. Am I crazy? I have the room. I just want to know that it is ok to start a herd with 4. I propbably wont breed them all next year, just a few. Is 4 too many for a beginning herd?

    Hi from NH

I have just started my mini farm with 2 baby Nigerian doelings last month. I am visiting a llama farm tomorrow to look at a possible guardian. Next month I get my wonderful Icelandic lambs. I am so excited to be part of this forum. I am learning a lot!!

Can't wait for my book to arrive on Camelidynamics :-)

I bought the book at the suggestion of the owner of my 'hopefully' new guardian llama. He is in training at her farm now. I will be visiting tomorrow so I have been reading the book every chance I get. I am a bit nervous but reading the book gives me hope!!

    Goats with Chickens?

Previously someone had posted asking if chickens and goats did well together. I didn't want to usurp their thread, so I decided to post what I found last night when I went to close the doors. Yes they are sleeping in nesting boxes. :)

    Goats and chickens

My chickens and baby goats were put together because I do not have a separate pen for the goats, yet. I will have one next week but I am sure there are going to be some issues. We made a small wooden shelter box for the goats to sleep in, but found them in the coop the second night. My little...

Let's Look at our Different Feeding Practices *GOATS*

Thank you everyone for your valuable information. I have had my 2 Nigerian babies (18 and 10 weeks old) for two weeks. Almost everything I have learned has been from these forums. This thread in particular has been excellent. I am learning what I have not been doing and seeing what I have...
