    Umbilical Hernias & Breeding

I have no personal experience with repairing hernias in cattle or breeding heifers that have them... The only knowledge I have of them is from books I've read in The Cattle Health Handbook by Heather Smith Thomas. She says that umbilical hernias seem to be genetic, and cows that had them as...

How to get down fever in a calf

In March of this year our 2 month old JerseyXHolstein got a mild case of pneumonia. She had a temp of 104, was coughing a little and had thick white nasal discharge. When we found her like that it was too late in the evening to call the vet so we ended up drenching her with garlic water and...

Is this cross would make a good family cow?

:woot That's awesome! Actually, the Angus bull could have been A1/A2, and she got his A2 gene. See, from what I understand the A1 and A2 business can be figured with Punnet squares. A1/A1 over A1/A1 will produce A1/A1 offspring 100% of the time. A1/A2 over A1/A1, there's a 50% chance of an...

Is this cross would make a good family cow?

Yep, we've been trying to work it out on paper when we'd get an A2A2 cow. It's confusing if it's not written down! I have no idea about Angus either... It would be interesting to check it out/get it tested.

Is this cross would make a good family cow?

Good luck on the testing. :) We recently tested two of ours and one was A1/A1 (Jersey) and the other was A1/A2 (JerseyxHolstein). I've heard that Guernseys have a lot of the A2/A2 genetics still in their blood though. Let us know when you get the results for Bella!

    New heifer!

We've settled on the name Mabel. :) After a bunch of trying out all the names and trying to view her dam with them (since one of these days she'll grow up big like her mommy), Mabel was the one we all liked and sounded good and fit.

    New heifer!

Thanks for the input everyone! We came up with a few more names this morning... like Maudy Bee. She's just so stinkin' cute it's hard to pick the perfect name!

    New heifer!

This adorable cutie pie was just born this morning, at 11:30 AM. Daisy started intense labor probably around 6ish, and we were able to watch the birth. It's cold here (had a few flurries this afternoon) so we gave her a fleece jacket. We haven't decided on a name yet, but have narrowed it...
