Hello,
My husband and I are taking the hike from south to north Florida (no mean feat in such a long state!) in a couple of weeks to pick up our Southdown Babydoll Sheep (brother and sister, 8 weeks old). We presently have 2 goats, 2 Akbash dogs, 2 cats, 3 tortoises, 3 donkeys, and 40+...
Hello, I just saw these posts. My husband and I moved to the "country" (relatively speaking in Naples, Florida) about 2 1/2 years ago. Before then we had exactly zero animals/pets but 6 kids at home. We now have exactly zero kids at home, but 2 goats, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 mini-donkeys, 3 tortoises...
Thanks for your help. It turns out that after a couple scary days, things calmed down and our pregnant jennet is back to normal. We kept her as quiet as we could for those 2 days, kept the other animals away from her, and let her rest. Seems like all is well now. Fingers crossed!
Our mini donkey is due in September (we think--we bought her pregnant). Last night she suffered some sort of trauma when we were out (I also lost two chickens). Don't know what happened, but she ended up with a leg caught on her halter. We got home, removed the bent halter, then checked for...
Thank you. I agree! Actually the donkeys have become amazingly tolerant of the puppy. The almost-yearling, in particular, seems to somewhat enjoy some puppy play. She plays with my goats as well. Now if we could just get the puppy to stop chasing the chickens! Bit that's for a separate post!
Yes, we monitor all the interactions between the minis and the puppy. I praise and reward the donkeys every time they show patience with the puppy. I hope they'll eventually associate the dog with rewards. They have shown a turn-around in their attitudes toward the goats, so I have hope for the...
We have two mini donkeys--a jennet and her foal. We also have two young goats and lots of chickens. When we first got our donkeys, they did not like the goats. The mother bit one of the goats (not hard enough to do damage, but it gave a clear message). However, now, less than a month later, the...
They are separated for most of the day by a fence. In the afternoons, when I get home from work, I let both the donkeys and goats have access to our grassy backyard so the donkeys can graze and the goats can cavort! ;)
I am usually close by to monitor. I scold Rosie when I feel she's become...
My little Rosie (7 month old mini-donkey jennet foal) expresses a certain "interest" in my baby goats. The goats are 2 months old and as sweet and innocent as ever. They have no fear of anything. The goats and donkeys (Rosie and her mom) are usually fine when together out in the back yard, but...
Got it, thanks. They don't know what to do with the water yet--just stick their noses in and sneeze--but I guess if they need it they'll figure it out!
I would love to feed them more! I feel bad leaving them chomping on an empty bottle. There are just so many horror stories of over- feeding kids and them dying painful deaths that I'm being cautious. I think I'll give them a little more and see how they do. Thanks again!
I love how welcoming everyone is! My twins' names are Ferdinand (after my favorite childhood story) and Daisie (Ferdie loved to smell the flowers in the story). Here are some photos. I do have one more question. Do they know to get out of the sun? I have them outside in their play area that has...
Thank you both very much. One is a buckling, the other a doeling. They are 2 weeks old. They weigh just over 8 lbs. each. I'm feeding them a bit more than the chart I found that suggests I should feed them (6 - 7oz, three times a day). I just went down from four times a day to three because...
My mini Nubians suck down their bottle so quickly and act like they're starving even after they finish. I know I can start giving them grain, but I'm not sure what that means. I hate to ask such a stupid question, but what type of grain is meant when people say to give goats as young as one week...
